Had been passing by Sunshine Plaza for a while now noticing the opening of the new King Bao within the building at the side facing Bencoolen Street — these folks had taken over the former premises of yet another dining establishment serving up mainland Chinese fare. The facade of King Bao should be fairly recognisable from far — the store facade features the use of bright red that makes them stand out quite a bit from the other shops located along the same row — its neighbours includes that of establishments such as Thai Gold Food as well. An establishment that mainly focuses on serving up mainland Chinese-style burgers, the menu does revolve around its burger offerings that generally sees the availability of chicken, beef and fish options; they also do serve up their burgers in Combo Meal sets, while they also have a good line-up of ala-carte snacks that serves up as side dishes as well.
The Grilled Chicken Pineapple Burger is just one of the few burgers that King Bao has to offer; that being said, this would be one out of two chicken burgers that is on the menu at King Bao — the other would be the Crispy Chicken Burger. As one would have noticed, the burger bun for the burgers at King Bao would differ from the usual burgers that one would usually get at Western or fast food establishments — this would be a mainland Chinese-style Pita bread that is baked fresh upon order; the Grilled Chicken Pineapple Burger would also come with a pineapple ring, grilled chicken and some leafy greens with mayonnaise in between as well. One thing we did enjoy about the Grilled Chicken Pineapple Burger was how it is being served warm — the Chinese-style Pita bread giving a soft yet toasty but slightly airy bite that isn’t quite as dense or carb-y as the traditional western-style burger bun out there; only felt that it was missing of a slight crispness from the crust on the exterior, though we did like the slight roast-y fragrance coming from the black sesame as well. The pineapple ring seems to be sticking onto the undersides of the top bun, but it does give a juicy and zingy contrast to the savoury, juicy and tender slab of grilled chicken to it; the flavours of the slab of chicken being fairly similar to New Orleans-style roasted chicken wings that some places to serve up. The mayonnaise bridges the chicken and the Chinese-style Pita bread with the leafy greens that gives the Grilled Chicken Pineapple Burger a more wholesome touch.
tried their signature hainanese chicken rice and it was really delicious! the chicken was steamed really well and is tender~ also had their chap chye which was very flavourful with the fried pork bits! the fish maw soup was delicious as well and paired perfectly with the meal
Really enjoyed the chicken rice here, especially the chap chye. The rice was insanely fragrant, and the chicken had a nice bite to it. But the chap chye is the real must-order for me, you can really taste the aroma from the dried shrimp and pork lard, which gives it so much depth and flavour. This is exactly why I always order it whenever I come hehe
Would definitely recommend coming here with your family or friends for a comforting meal!
Recently, I had lunch at Royale Mercure Bugis which runs from 12 pm to 2.30 pm, priced at $65++ per adult and $32.50++ per child. Dinner is $75++ and $37.50++ per child. The menu rotates daily so every visit feels fresh and you never quite know what surprise dishes will show up.
Seafood on ice was a joy. The prawns were sweet, bouncy, and easy to peel with cutlery, which made them extra enjoyable without the mess. Squid leaned chewy, while blue swimmer crab and mussels rounded out the spread. The steamed tiger prawns in Chinese wine were fragrant and tender, and the steamed fish came out moist and clean tasting.
The live station lamb cutlets were juicy and tender, with just the right bite. Slow roast beef was soft and hearty. Pork knuckle stew was fatty melt in the mouth goodness. Satay tasted smoky and authentic, duck and chicken were nicely spiced, and wonton noodles gave a comforting touch. French onion soup with parmesan toast was rich and satisfying.
Desserts and drinks rounded off the meal well. Free flow coffee and tea, plus juices like orange and apple, kept things refreshing. Fruits that day were rock melon, watermelon, and dragonfruit, all sweet and juicy. Almond pudding with longan was silky, black forest cake rich, pear crumble homely, caramel custard smooth, and DIY muah chee fun to make. Hot cheng tng was a nostalgic sugary drink to finish with.
Overall, the buffet gave me variety, freshness, and comfort. My belly was happy and satisfied.

Came for the chicken, will be coming back especially for the chilli 🤤
🍆🍆🐔🍆🍆
Really enjoyed the eggplant as well!!
I really enjoyed the Hainanese pork chop!! The food was homely and the portion was generous 😋 The chicken collagen broth was really yummy too, perfect for rainy days!
This Hainanese chicken rice restaurant absolutely blew me out of the water. The rice was fragrant, the chicken was tender and flavourful, the cucumber slices were fresh, and the house green chilli provides a nice but mild kick. The braised eggplant is one of the best eggplant dishes I've ever had in my life — there were crispy bits inside along with the eggplant and minced meat, which made it the star of the show. The Thai-style tofu was great as well, though I personally wished that it was a little more silky inside. I got barley water as my drink, and it was standard. On top of everything, the prices mean that I will definitely be coming here again.
the roasted chicken rice was my favourite, very flavourful. the thai-style tofu was also very good! crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
staff were very nice and the food also came very fast. would highly recommend!
was pleasantly surprised with how well executed each dish was. the chicken rice was definitely the star of the show, one of the better hainanese chicken rice i've had. the hainan fen was decent as well, worth a try
enjoyed the chicken rice here, everything was done really well, from the meat to the rice. chicken was tender, rice was just the right amount of flavour without overpowering the chicken. will be back to fix my chicken rice cravings!
The popularity of handmade wantons and dumplings which started from the establishment of Yuen Kee Dumpling’s very first outlet in Singapore has led to not just the brand itself expanding in a massive fashion in the last couple of months, but also an influx of establishments that are serving up similar offerings as well. One such establishment that had opened in recent times would be that of Mama Ju Dumpling 桔妈妈云饺 that is located within the BGAIN 261 Eating House within Blk 261 Waterloo Street — other notable tenants situated in this coffeeshop would include the likes of Tan Xiang Sliced Fish Soup 碳香鱼片汤, 唐人街 Chinatown Curry Fish Head and Pot & Prawns. Mama Ju Dumpling takes up a space that is half the size of the typical stall at the coffeeshop — supposedly sharing its half of the space with a stall serving Indian fare, the other stall had since ceased operations and Mama Ju Dumpling is the only one occupying the space. Mama Ju Dumpling serves up handmade wantons and dumplings; its wanton dishes are listed as ChaoShou on the menu here — it also does serve a variety of noodle dishes that also features their dumplings and wantons as well.
Mama Ju Dumpling serves up two variants of their wanton dishes — the Shrimp Crab Roe ChaoShou and the Corn and Pork ChaoShou; both variants can be opted to come with soup or dry, with patrons being able to make the choice of going for Garlic Sauce, Chili Oil and Peanut Sauce to go with the wantons. We were offered to have our order of the Shrimp Crab Roe ChaoShou served with both garlic sauce and peanut sauce. Considering the way that the dish is presented, it is difficult not to make direct comparisons with the ChaoShou here against the wontons served up a Yuen Kee Dumpling. We did find that the Shrimp Crab Roe ChaoShou was a good attempt to serve up an alternative here; the ChaoShou being well-sized and came with one shrimp, crab roe and pork filling within. The ChaoShou did come with wonton skin that is smooth and silky; the insides were well stuffed and carried a good bite. The flavours of the pork filling felt more dominant than the other elements; one that was pleasant in a way that was savoury without carrying any undesirable porky stench — the shrimp did carry a good bite, though we were missing a bit of the popping sensation from the crab roe. The mix of Garlic Sauce and Peanut Sauce does provide a savoury and creamy touch to the ChaoShou — whilst Mama Ju Dumpling isn’t as heavy-handed as Yuen Kee Dumpling when it came to the portioning of the sauces, the mix of Garlic Sauce and Peanut Sauce is a non-spicy version that carried light hints of soy sauce with a soft nutty fragrance which adds on to the ChaoShou.
We ordered chicken rice, Thai tofu and collagen soup! All dishes were great! Love their chilli & ginger sauces! Will be back to try other dishes.
