Sticky Red Date Pudding @ $11.90++

Oh this is so amazing and we could keep eating it forever. The red date pudding itself is so perfectly done and the vanilla ice cream and dried longan complement it so well. Slightly on the sweet side but it's great for us.

Ellenborough Market Café

Ordered the Set A - Ayam Curry Kapitan that had chicken curry, nyonya chap chye, sambal egg, and blue pea rice. A hearty and filling meal, although i did not quite liked the soft texture of the chap chye. The curry chicken and sambal egg was yummy though.

The coconut milk wasn't V strong, this very wet version is pretty good due to the complexity, although it's not particularly intense. There's probably red dates inside I believe, the black rice carries a lot of bite

Overall a good version

Not gonna deny that finding the right spot to actually settle for Nyonya Kueh with a sit-down setting is really difficult — an especially so for a casual joint with dine-in seats serving up artisanal Kuehs that aren’t made in a mass-produced setting; quite glad that these days we do have establishments like Ollella, Chalk Farm and Sinpopo Brand that can somehow cater to these cravings but it has been a long while since we had wanted to give HariAnns Nonya Table a go. Whilst being a time-honoured and respectable brand name that takes the effort to stay true to their roots and serve up a slice of Peranakan heritage through their offerings, HariAnns Nonya Table has also been one brand that is rather inventive with their Nonya Kueh offerings — apart from the usual Kueh Salat, Kueh Lapis, Ang Ku Kueh etc., they do also offer quite a colourful line-up of Nonya Kueh inspired from local-style desserts that sees these desserts being served up in the style of Nonya Kueh as well.

We were having hard cravings for Nonya Kueh whilst passing their Bugis Junction outlet; while it wasn’t our intention to go for more than one of their Kueh offerings, we did find ourselves going for both the Kueh Burbur ChaCha and the Kueh Taro (Yam) — both flavours being their inventive take on Nonya Kueh with a bit of a touch replicating that of other local-style desserts. The Kueh Burbur ChaCha is the more colourful one of the two — replicates the standard Burbur ChaCha with a layer of coconut mousse that comes embedded with purple and orange sweet potato chunks and taro chunks. To achieve a more colourful presentation of the Kueh Burbur ChaCha, they have also added two layers of blue above the layer of coconut mousse. While the coconut mousse itself provided a soft, springy chew without sticking to the teeth, the chunks of sweet potato and taro added an earthy note to the Kueh. The layers of blue in the meanwhile seemed to add a slight hint of sweetness; pretty much the same as what one would expect out of the usual Kueh Lapis elsewhere. The Kueh Taro (Yam) does seem to be one that replicates the Teochew Yam Paste — the format of which the Kueh is being served in is almost akin to that of Kueh Talam that comes with a coconut mousse layer and a Pandan mousse layer; the only difference here being the Pandan mousse have been replaced with a mousse layer featuring Taro instead. The Kueh Taro (Yam) wasn’t particularly sweet, but does carry that earthy fragrance with a slight hint of shallot oil — all that with a slightly saltishness from the coconut mousse below. Both Kuehs do come at a reduced level of sweetness that is still pretty reassemble for our tastebuds; all without being too sticky that it gets all over the teeth — something that is worth a try for the curious.

$6.70; prepared fresh in the mornings, ready ~10+/11am

This restaurant serves Nyonya and Indonesian cuisine, offering set lunch specials that you get to customise for your choices of dishes.

You can choose from either white rice or buttered rice, then your choice of vegetable. I went for their Nonya Chap Chai.

Lastly you select the main dish to complete your meal. There’s 6 options to choose from and I got their curry chicken.

The portion may not big but sufficient for one person, as every set lunch comes with chicken satay and calamansi juice.

The curry chicken is rich in flavour but not too spicy.

Beef Rendang ($36)
Presenting tender chunks of Australian shin meat in a relatively thick coconut milk-based sauce enriched with aromatics like ginger, lemongrass, lime leaves and a dash of curry powder; the classic dish is a must-order as well. Not too in your face with the heat, I liked that their rendition is not as spicy so I can get the flavours of the beef and the spices.

Ngo Heong ($20)
A very nice starter, Blue Ginger’s signature came highly recommended and rightly so. Moist, juicy, and fried justsuperbly well; I like that the five-spiced golden brown rolls were not overly crispy or crusty. The beancurd skin was thin, moreish and not greasy at all. The chunks of savoury minced pork, succulent prawns and crunchy sweet chestnut were also wonderfully seasoned and fresh-tasting. Perfect with the sweet gooey black sauce served on the side.

Recently, my friend and I indulged in a weekend high tea buffet serving Peranakan cuisine, and we left feeling happily full.

From the atmosphere and costs to the food, every aspect was justifiable. It was the most valuable buffet compared to their normal weekday and weekend buffets, as it was the cheapest of the three and served almost all the dishes.

The buffet featured finger foods like DIY Kueh Pie Tee, allowing you to make your own pie tee with a mountainous topping. Another unique item was Chempedak Fritter, a fruit fritter tasting similar to jackfruit. They also offered standard dim sum items.

The mains included Nonya Mee Siam, Laksa, Nasi Lemak, and sides like Fried Chicken Wings, Babi Ponteh Kong Bak Pau, Sambal Telor, and Sambal Lady's Finger. I particularly enjoyed the Fried Chicken Wings; the marination was deep, and the wings were fried to a perfect golden brown, with an aroma that lingered from the meat to the bone. They were so good that I had quite a large plate of them. The Laksa was another pleasing dish, with its smooth, creamy, and coconutty curry complemented by dried shrimp chili, making it a wonderfully fragrant and slurpy delight. Unfortunately, the Babi Ponteh was a tad salty and the meat wasn't tender enough, and the Mee Siam was also somewhat salty.

For desserts, I tried some Kueh, which were quite normal to me, but I'm not a fan of Kueh, so I can't comment much. The Pulut Hitam was rich, thick, and creamy but tasted slightly burnt, possibly due to inconsistent stirring. Chilled Soya Beancurd and Lemongrass Jelly with Aloe Vera were pure bliss. The watermelon was sweet and juicy. They also offered Mingo Ice Cream. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks of the day were included in the buffet.

If you familiar with the oldest Nyonya restaurant in Singapore, then you should know the name of Guan Hoe Soon. Straits Chinese is managed by Guan Hoe Soon Group and has a few outlets here.

One of them is located at the second level of Esplanade Mall, serving their authentic Nyonya foods right at the centre of city.

Since I came along, so I went for their rice individual set menu.

The set comes with a plate of ayam rendang, chap cai and blue pea rice.

They are flavourful but not distinctive enough as compared to some Nyonya restaurants I been to unfortunately.

Best to come here in group and enjoy more of their dishes.

Wok-tossed Laksa ($12) and Dry Mee Siam ($12)
Both noodles are fried with seafood and taupok/taukwa and they taste pretty similar. They are not bad, but didn’t leave much of an impression~
