Met an old friend who lives in Melbourne and just back in Singapore for a short stint. This friend who is in his 70s told me this place has the best porridge in the whole of Chinatown and when he was younger, he ate there a lot, so you bet my expectations were set very high.
Ordered fish belly porridge at $12 per bowl. I got about 4 pieces of fish and yes they were belly cuts with long bones easily removed. Those were nice. But the porridge was not silky smooth like most Cantonese porridge is, more like grainy Teochew style porridge and what killed it for me was the use of factory supplied fried shallots.
Lots of porridge better than this and maybe cheaper. In the end my elderly friend had to admit times have changed since he migrated.
I visited this place often when I was young because my dad loves it. Although I felt that the quality has dropped over the years, I would still come back here for a comforting bowl of claypot frog porridge. Mix the gravy with congee and it's all good for a warm and hearty meal.
It was also my first time trying their fried intestines which were crispy but too hard for my teeth. Tried soaking it in the gravy and congee but it does not help to soften any bit. Its probably the first and last time ordering this.
Dried Chilli Frog 》$16/medium
Fried Intestines 》$6.50
Porridge 》$1/bowl
Pork porridge was $5 and fried intestines was $7. I was quite disappointed. The standard has dropped over the years. The food seems to be delivered from a central kitchen and make hot here. The fried intestines needs to be soaked in the porridge, otherwise quite tough.
This too has been one of our places for a yummy congee style porridge for years. We enjoyed having the porridge along with deep fried crispy large intestines.
Do not fret that its tables are filled all around the coffeeshop as there are plenty of tables on its 2nd level.
Where is your go-to place for a tasty porridge?
🤩🤩
Many people would frequent this place for porridge but it is one of my go to places for sliced fish soup b/c I lurveee the broth. 😍
I like that they added multiple ginger slices into the soup, really elevates the taste. 👏🏻 & they are pretty generous w their fish slices too! Each pot is priced at $6.80.
TIP: If you like eating chili 🌶 like me, go add a few pieces of chilli padi into the soup to get that extra kick. 🔥🔥 Damm shiok. 🤤

Pork Porridge with Century Egg, $4.50. A relatively large bowl of porridge for the price! Very smooth silky porridge with minced meat and generous portion of Century egg👏🏼👏🏼! This traditional porridge is very tasty on its own and texture is just right, not too watery nor sticky! Fried onions and scallions topping surely adds more flavours to it! Super yummy lunch! .
