the Ro-Ppong-Roje ($17.80++) from Nipong Naepong consists of wheat noodles in a tomato-based cream sauce, topped with melted cheese. it looks like spaghetti and tastes like tomato noodles. worth a shot but it can get quite cloying after a few bites!

I think this bowl of porridge cost $7. wish it had pig liver added - it is hard to find good pig liver porridge in singapore! nevertheless, the porridge was smooth and the century egg was creamy - a decent bowl!

the fuzhou fishball noodles ($6) here are quite different from that of other stalls. the fishball is springy and chewy without being bouncy like a ping pong ball (ala living with lydia). the hidden bit of minced meat adds some savouriness, and the meepok is extremely slurp-worthy. i love it very much!

thin, hakata style noodles, rich, swee tonkatsu broth and a scoop of fiery tomato-flavoured minced meat, this bowl of ramen fills your tummy and helps you to work up a sweat!!

essentially a double down with buns. double patty, double cheese, double bun, for when you want to feel unhealthy and eat enough calories to support a small village.

so @brotherbird_milkncroissants does new flavours regularly, and it’s getting more and more difficult to secure a stash of their delicious baked goods. I particularly enjoyed their lemon meringue cruffin($4), one of the new offerings this week. bright, tart lemon-flavoured cream is piped into their signature muffin-shaped mochi croissants and topped with toasted meringue. each bite is crunchy, chewy, flaky, sweet, sour and absolutely delicious. .

crispy rice, bits of salted fish, diced chicken and chinese sausage. not the best claypot rice i’ve eaten but satisfying nonetheless. particularly enjoyed scraping the bits of burnt rice from the bottom of the pot. yum. .

been hankering for a good hor fun for a while. this 月光河粉 did not disappoint. (月光 or moonlight refers to the addition of a raw egg on top.) thick sheets of rice noodles stir-fried in a sweet, savoury sauce with bits of meat and seafood, topped with a raw egg. break the yolk, squeeze some lime and mix it all up - a satisfying dinner right there 🤤

the egg and cheese sandwich with an added homemade sausage patty ($6) from @crack.sg located at @timbreplus at onenorth.
this might be the closest that singapore gets to #eggslut without a franchise of the store actually opening here. one might be tempted to compare this to a sausage mcmuffin, but looks are the only similarity between this sandwich and the mcdonald’s breakfast staple.
freshly prepared to order, the creamy egg is paired with a slice of cheddar and slightly spicy mayo - sriracha perhaps. the sausage patty does not have a funky processed meat smell and isn’t drowned in pepper - quite unlike the one from mcdonald’s. it retains a good bite and you can actually make out pieces of meat in the patty. the addition of pickles provides some welcome crunch. finally, the proceedings are rounded up by a pillowy-soft brioche bun that yields to the bite with a gentle sweetness.
add $2.50 to make it a meal with fries (a tad over-salted), slaw and iced coffee. a real steal for the price! if not for its inconvenient location, this delicious sandwich would definitely be a staple in my books 🤤

the signature chicken and rice from @birdfolks.sg. sliced chicken thigh brined and double fried, paired with garlic butter rice, soft boiled egg and vegetables.
the chicken was tender and juicy because of its brine. the double frying ensured that the batter was extra crispy, and I loved the nooks and crannies that gave it a lovely crunch after frying. the chicken is supposedly marinated in a mixture of asian herbs, but i found the taste somewhat similar to prawn paste chicken which i love. this was basically popcorn chicken on crack.
of note, the rice comes in a variety of flavours including tomato oregano, cilantro lime and garlic butter. each mouthful is rich and evenly flavoured, resulting in a very moreish dish!
I just wish the shop was a little more accessible. it is located at a shopping mall in west coast called NeWest, and probably 80% of the mall is not tenanted. talk about a ghost town!

the char siew rice ($10.90+) from @onebowlsg, locates within the Sultan Hotel along Sultan Road.
the char siew here is lovingly covered in a soy-caramel glaze that is both sweet and savoury. there is a good ratio of meat to fat, giving it both a good bite while coating the oral cavity in an explosion of oily goodness. it reminded me of the amazing char siew from char!
topped with fried garlic and chye poh, the fried rice explodes with garlicky flavour and possesses a strong wok hei. the heady aroma is really quite enticing but a breath mint or two may be in order after you have demolished this dish.
i would definitely return to try the other items on the menu 🤤🤤

the unagi tama don ($8.80) from @donyasingapore. barely-set egg and chewy grilled unagi atop a bed of japanese rice. the unagi can’t compare with the freshly killed and grilled man man unagi, but at this price point one can hardly expect that. I would come back if i were in the area and craving jap food. plus, there’s creamier nearby so can get waffles after 😬
