I think this bowl of porridge cost $7. wish it had pig liver added - it is hard to find good pig liver porridge in singapore! nevertheless, the porridge was smooth and the century egg was creamy - a decent bowl!

crispy rice, bits of salted fish, diced chicken and chinese sausage. not the best claypot rice i’ve eaten but satisfying nonetheless. particularly enjoyed scraping the bits of burnt rice from the bottom of the pot. yum. .

reminiscing the lunch i had at @garanggrill a while back. this lunch set features their famous garang rice paired with flat iron steak, mushroom alfredo paired with lime leaf chicken, soft boiled egg topped with smoked pork oil and a green salad to make things healthy.
the garang rice is essentially fried rice cooked with beef fat and dark soy sauce. there is an incredible amount of wok hei in the rice - the smokiness is the first thing that hits followed by a gentle sweetness from the soy sauce which is quite irresistible. the accompanying flat iron steak was lean and tender. cooked medium, it was very enjoyable.
the mushroom alfredo was an unexpected standout of the meal. thin spaghetti (?angel hair pasta) cooked in a creamy sauce that had the same wok hei aroma as the rice! this smokiness helped to cut the richness of the sauce, resulting in a very moreish pasta dish. the lime leaf chicken is essentially fried chicken covered in some sort of limey, spicy mayonnaise. it reminded me of japanese nanban chicken which I like very much 😬
best part about this place is that there is no service charge, AND there is a concurrent 10% opening discount going on now. furthermore, the first 8 plates of this lunch special are going at $19.90 instead of the usual $29.90! bring a friend or come hungry, this meal is sure to make you full with happiness 🤤

the bowl of porridge from ah chiang’s porridge, as recommended by @badboiibb. ordered the pig liver porridge with century egg so that I could relive my hk porridge experience. though the porridge texture was smooth and creamy, I felt that it was quite bland and required a generous dose of soya sauce to perk it up. the pieces of liver, though not overcooked, were too small for my liking (look at the liver slices from ho hung kee!) not much to be said about the century egg; it was pretty tasty. for $6, this bowl would make a decent supper or breakfast methinks. the porridge hunt continues!

tried the pork porridge ($4) at clementi market today with @alfred.seng. The smooth, creamy congee from ho hung kee has been on my mind since coming back from hk and I was hoping to find something similar in singapore. alas, the porridge was not as smooth or rich and the liver was overcooked. i did enjoy the minced pork balls, though - must have been the marinade of sesame oil and soy sauce. does anyone have recommendations for good cantonese-style congee in singapore?
.

when I think of wok hei, i think of a flaming hot wok over a roaring flame and char kuay teow glistening with an oily sheen. but this congee from mui kee, situated at casa verde at the botanic gardens, is all that and more. the congee is silky without being watery, and each mouthful is imbued with so much wok hei it could put most char kuay teow places to shame. you can't see grains of rice in the porridge - it really is that smooth. the toppings of fish belly and pork balls are wonderfully tender and flavourful, but really the star is the porridge.
sitting with a book in hand, watching people and fluffy dogs passing by, i can think of no better way to spend a morning for now.
my only gripe is that bowl of porridge cost $14.50. could it cost a little less please?!!

Soft, fluffy pancakes drenched in maple butter - these pancakes are amazing. apart from hotcakes, these are the best pancakes in Singapore. but share them with a friend; this is really too much for one person.

i maintain that adding kimchi to food makes it taste better. case in point - kimchi fries. crisp fries paired with crunchy slivers of sour cabbage - the koreans are geniuses!!

and beneath that slightly thick beer batter is seabass, people. not blah-tasting mushy dory but seabass. with just enough firmness and juiciness - it might just be my favourite fish.

On rare days that I decide that meat is not the order of the day (rare days, i must add), i head down to Baja Fresh for a double serving of chips and salsa. Think fresh tomato that bursts with juice and crispy, sharp onions, coupled with cilantro and lime. Pair that with always-crispy corn chips and the medley of flavors and textures means a party in your mouth!!!

i suppose half the cost of this dish ($26) goes into the foie gras. don't eat it often so i can't say whether it is good or not, but it was creamy without having too much of a funky smell.

otherwise...one could probably get the rest of this dish at a quarter of the price at a hawker center.

nevertheless, i will still come back to Sin Lee for the salted egg chicken burger and the broccoli salad 😍 #sinleefoods #BurppleXChope
