the kouign amman ($3.50) here is excellent - warm, crisp layers of pastry surrounding a buttery, bready core, covered in a sugary glaze and studded with sugar bits. be still my heart!
there are two kinds of pancakes - the huge, dense, post prandial coma-inducing type and the pillowy soft soufflé type. these pancakes here clearly fall into the latter group.
created in conjunction with @rizlabosg, these pancakes ($14) can be found at @poofy_sg which has taken up residence at @habitat_sg. though it takes a good 10 minute trek to reach the shop from the mrt, these pancakes are worth the walk (and the 30 minute waiting time.) ethereally fluffy and moist, they possess a strong eggy flavour not unlike that of a castella cake. served warm off the pan and topped with chantilly cream, these are pancakes i would return for!
who knew you could cold brew tea as well?? matchaya’s cold brew matcha is thick, sweet and absolutely refreshing on a hot day ☺️☺️☺️
so @brotherbird_milkncroissants does new flavours regularly, and it’s getting more and more difficult to secure a stash of their delicious baked goods. I particularly enjoyed their lemon meringue cruffin($4), one of the new offerings this week. bright, tart lemon-flavoured cream is piped into their signature muffin-shaped mochi croissants and topped with toasted meringue. each bite is crunchy, chewy, flaky, sweet, sour and absolutely delicious. .
at @merelyicecream, one of the few places in singapore that i will return to for ice cream. the ice cream here is consistently rich and creamy, and the cone bowls are always buttery, warm and crispy. my usual order here is the salted butterscotch but today i elected to try their s’mores flavour - essentially a digestive biscuit/graham cracker flavoured ice cream mixed with chocolate chunks. beneath that is their valrhona chocolate ice cream which is rich, bittersweet and absolutely delicious. so good.
chocolate pancakes from @clintonst_sg ($19++). think thick, buttery, fluffy pancakes topped with bitter dark chocolate, drizzled with fragrant maple butter. the warmth of the freshly-made pancakes helps to melt the chocolate, resulting in an sticky, melty chocolatey mess that is irresistible. Come hungry or come prepared to share - this dish is big both on taste and on size. No other place I would go to for pancakes in Singapore (hotcakes not counted hehe)
heard about the 2 hour long queues at this bubble tea place in taiwan so I was pleasantly surprised to find... no queue when I went. In addition, being number 11 on the queue that afternoon made me wonder: were there only 10 customers before me??
tried the Uji Snow ($6.50), made of matcha, milk and pearls that are supposedly manufactured in taiwan. essentially a starbucks green tea latte with a stronger matcha flavour and a milkier aftertaste (how do they do that??) though I didn’t get the opportunity to choose the sugar level, I liked that it wasn’t really sweet so the bitterness of the matcha really shone through. at $6.50, though, it is quite pricey, though one cannot deny the drinks do look quite instagram-worthy...
warm, buttery, crisp waffles topped with pistachio soft serve. though the ice cream was slightly icy, it tasted fairly strongly of pistachio. it was also nice how a small wafer disc was placed under the ice so it wouldn’t melt all over the waffles. at $18 for two flavours of soft serve and 2 waffles this was pretty pricey. if i wanted soft serve i’d probably go to matchaya and if i wanted the same waffles i would head to creamier instead...
thinking about the time when the sun was shining and it was actually hot enough to require a cold drink. missing the coffee from @oldhencoffee - the cold brew was creamy with just a hint of sweetness and acidity, while the peppermint cocoa reminds one of christmas. christmas in the blazing tropics where you don’t need a fireplace to keep warm 😂
still my favourite waffles after 5 years. served fresh off the waffle iron, topped with rich, gooey salted caramel and vanilla ice cream, it is hard to bear this. the waffle that yields its crisp crust at the slightest slice to reveal fluffy waffley goodness inside, the salty caramel you could lick off a spoon and the cold, clean, creamy vanilla ice cream. it is a dream to eat and a nightmare for diets.
i used to think the matcha soft serve was good.
then i tried the houjicha which blew my mind.
i picked up the pieces off the floor and tried the nama chocolate which was even better.
but the azuki soft serve blows it out of the water. lightly sweet and the red bean flavour doesn't overpower. the soft-serve here is properly churned - you can turn the cup over and it won't drop out!! (i should know, i tried 😬)
seriously these guys are the best. they maintain an active social media presence and always reply to questions promptly. (well usually i ask what flavour is on sale that week 😂😂)
does anyone know that feeling when you bite into a lemon tart/lime pie and it tastes sweet? No such thing here. This key lime pie is proper sour, and the zest grated on top is a pleasant contrast to the smooth curd. one of the better ones out there!
