Burgers and Sandwiches.
the black & white burger ($25++) from wheelerâs estate is an upgraded diner style cheese burger. think black angus, provolone, grilled onion, relish and rocket in a charcoal bun. the burger was sufficiently juicy and the condiments balanced each other without any topping dominating in terms of flavour. paired with the beautiful greenery surrounding the restaurant, iâd argue that a meal here is worth its price in taste and scenery!
this kimchi beef wrap ($18) from dean and deluca left me with mixed feelings. though it is hard to go wrong with the combination of kimchi, cheese and beef, i felt like the wrap could have come out of a microwave from 7-11. tasty but... should i be paying so much for this??
one of my favourite sandwiches from park bench deli, the patty melt ($17+) is essentially a burger with sourdough for buns. juicy patty, melty cheese, tangy pickles, crisp sourdough - this is a sandwich for the big boys.
in my opinion, ya kun has the most consistent toast out of the various chains. the bread is always thin and crisp, the eggs are always runny, and i love the copious amounts of cold salted butter added to the bread đ
essentially a double down with buns. double patty, double cheese, double bun, for when you want to feel unhealthy and eat enough calories to support a small village.
the egg and cheese sandwich with an added homemade sausage patty ($6) from @crack.sg located at @timbreplus at onenorth.
this might be the closest that singapore gets to #eggslut without a franchise of the store actually opening here. one might be tempted to compare this to a sausage mcmuffin, but looks are the only similarity between this sandwich and the mcdonaldâs breakfast staple.
freshly prepared to order, the creamy egg is paired with a slice of cheddar and slightly spicy mayo - sriracha perhaps. the sausage patty does not have a funky processed meat smell and isnât drowned in pepper - quite unlike the one from mcdonaldâs. it retains a good bite and you can actually make out pieces of meat in the patty. the addition of pickles provides some welcome crunch. finally, the proceedings are rounded up by a pillowy-soft brioche bun that yields to the bite with a gentle sweetness.
add $2.50 to make it a meal with fries (a tad over-salted), slaw and iced coffee. a real steal for the price! if not for its inconvenient location, this delicious sandwich would definitely be a staple in my books đ¤¤
glad to have a chance to try the reuben from @mooseheadkitchenbar. it comes with a generous serving of tender pastrami, paired with crunchy sauerkraut, creamy cheese, pickles and reuben dressing, sandwiched between toasted white bread. it is at once meaty, juicy, crunchy, creamy and absolutely delicious. napkins are a must!
the Nashville Chicken Burger ($15+) from @meatsmith_sg. after seeing howlinâ rays on youtube, I have had a craving for a good fried chicken sandwich in Singapore. not that I donât like the mcspicy or the zinger, but i wanted to see what the hype over nashville hot chicken is all about.
the burger looks small on first glance, a palm sized brioche bun struggling to contain fried chicken that spills out the sides. it is dressed with a creamy mayo-based sauce and another spicy chipotle-based dressing, topped with refreshing slaw and finished with a few pickle slices.
however, the burger proved to be a substantial treat. the fried chicken was nice and crisp with lovely bits of fried batter. the chicken itself was juicy, and the slaw provided a nice contrast to the tender meat. the sauce added some smokey heat without burning the tongue, and the brioche bun rounded out the proceedings with a tinge of sweetness. not sure how authentic this chicken sandwich is, but i look forward to try the other offerings at meatsmith đ¤¤
in my opinion, the best prata in Singapore can be found at Mr Mohganâs Super Crispy Roti Prata. However, it only opens in the morning, and it is located at East Coast. I literally have to make a pilgrimage every time i go there. The west-side alternative to this would thus be Enaq prata, located at Jurong East and Ghim Moh.
The plain prata ($1) looks like a biscuit - shatteringly crisp exterior revealing fluffy, chewy prata. Though it isnât quite as fragrant as the prata from Mr Mohganâs, it beats the competition around it for miles (literally). Pair it with their sambal chili for a salty, spicy kick that is hard to beat đ¤¤
someone once said that a pizza is made of quality ingredients on good bread. the pizza at @ristoranteluka is certainly an example of a stellar pizza. cooked in a wood-fired oven, the pizza itself is light with an airy, chewy crust. the classic pairing of mozzarella, mushrooms, egg, together with truffle cream AND truffle oil lent a fragrant aroma to the pizza and resulted in a dish that is greater than the sum of its parts. pizzas cost about $20-$25++ (and they have mean pastas too) so do check it out!
colour makes things look better. and this bagel is proof that not all meat-less food tastes bad. chewy haloumi and shiitake, creamy emmental and smoked mayo, crisp rocket and piquant pickled pepper, all lovingly wrapped in a cheddar bagel. I would definitely get this again, if not for the many other options available on the menu that are oh-so-tempting...
here at bird bird for the collaboration with three buns. the burger of the day is the bird bun ($16), a fried chicken thigh paired with nam jim slaw and coconut mayo, sandwiched by rice buns. the taste of the burger is undoubtedly thai-inspired, with its sour and spicy slaw (nam jim = dipping sauce in thai) and the juicy chicken thigh that had a slight lemongrass kick to it. the coconut mayo conjured images of the sea and coconut trees swaying in the breeze - well actually it reminded me of the nasi lemak burger from mcdonaldâs. finally, the rice buns bravely soaked up all the juices from the chicken and the slaw while keeping its shape and texture. toasted (oat?) flakes on the top bun added crunch as well. pity itâs so far from home (and also a limited time collab). hoping it will pop up again sometime soon đŹ
