Sandwich/ Burger Galore

Sandwich/ Burger Galore

Bread lover is my middle name, so it follows I love burgers and sandwiches... My idea of a hearty meal any day any time

That cross section of a sandwich that tasted every bit as good as it looked. A special mention on the tangy rich aioli like sauce that was impossible to resist and went well with the classic combination of avocado, scrambled eggs and melted cheese.
You’d dream about this vegeterian sandwich.

Was greeted by a scene of mainly young families with toddlers running beside or trudging along dogs excited to mingle. The mind registered, yes this definitely looks like the weekends!

Visiting Flourish Bakehouse is an ideal weekend activity to “plant” yourself on the space’s photogenic green “lawn” and chill over comforting bakes 🙌🏻

I tried the Apple turnover galette with salted caramel which had a crumbly tart like base. Then we also had the banana bread, pear cardamon and flourless chocolate cakes; each tasted lovingly baked by hand. There is also a hot food menu of grilled cheese sandwiches here.

Banhmi holds a special place in my heart - they bring me back to a time during my overseas community service project in school where these sandwiches were sold 20-50cents sustenance everyday in Hue where we were helping with simple construction of a kindergarten. At price tags of double digit multiples in Singapore it only speaks of the different income level, economic development of the 2 countries.
That said while I had high hopes of this coffeeshop-like Vietnamese place since I’ve visited years ago when they were in Orchard, I was dismayed as the quality of food had severely deteriorated with higher price points compared to neighbouring Vietnamese places. My banhmi was only passable as the chicken meat was tough but thankfully seasoned with flavor. No wonder the place was quite empty on a Saturday evening when other places along the Geylang Road stretch were full house.

A heartfelt take on an all day breakfast item I’d gladly have again for dinner. Two slices of brioche bread were weighted generously inside and outside with savoury gruyere cheese; also sandwiched within two slices of honey baked ham. Then a perfectly fried sunny side up sits on the already good on it own ham and cheese sandwich. All I’d say is- this was very soul comforting and belly satisfying.

It looked like meat, had the texture like meat but sadly did not taste like meat. Yet I can declare to have finally tried the impossible series and should not be having it again anytime soon (unless other plant based meat substitutes taste different). I’d sheepishly comment that I do not partake meat products everyday which relieves (some of) my contribution to the environmental damage from unsustainable meat production.

On a less serious note the burger & lobster experience was a fairly enjoyable one with premium ingredients and a nice variety of options with the combo deal (good for 3 pax). I’d suggest opting for the normal fries as a top up for the premium truffle option gets you truffle salt and non existent truffle oil (if there was suppose to be the latter).

A revamped dzert cafe with a new name and different menu. Thankfully the best thing here remains and that’s their ....... dense waffles that the owner informs is made of a high egg white content.
Easily and euphorically I savoured each bite of my smoked salmon, egg mayo variant. While I would have appreciated melted shredded cheese instead of the small chunks I got; they did not hinder the joy of having this ultimately delightful waffle sandwich.
If you do visit the cafe, there’s no reason not to order these pale golden brown squares because they come in both savoury and sweet options.

To explain the context- this I had after a pint of beer. The fried-upon-order falafels doused in a mirage of sauces, pickled and un-pickled vegetables were like the best thing to have in that context. I mean fried food with (just 1) pint of booze could hardly go wrong; but the pita sandwiches with fried falalfels were almost like a gift from above.
Another burpplebeyond outdoing yourself moment, as $8 U.P. for these vegetarian sandwiches I’d considered slight steep but $4 I’d gladly have over and over again.

I finally tried a project warung burger and I loved it- especially because of the authentic beef patties (you’d get the chewy veins in them knowing real beef went into these). Other than the lack of greens in my burger I have zero complains and this rightfully one of the best burgers in Singapore at its price and quality.

A coincidence (?) that I happen to have a similar dish 2 days in a row at different places; calling for inevitable comparisons.

Part II: Burgers

Since I declared outrightly comparison was inevitable I’d extend to thank Burpplebeyond for I get to enjoy expensive burgers (>$20) at just a slight premium vis a vis a McDonald’s meal and even more affordable than most Carl’s Jr meals.

My Ohana Burger at the armoury was all the right ticks (butter buns, delicious sauce, enough greens); but stop short at the slightly dry and poorly thin patty. Might be a reason why half the menu came in double patties.

The burger here came without a flaw, buttered brioche bun, with a thick juicy beef patty done medium rare as requested. Well sautéed mushrooms with a gold standard of what caramelised onion should taste like.

The best thing we had on our first visit to Chef Icon had to be the yakiniku mushroom sandwich that was quite memorable; the black pepper sauce that so prominently coats the meat-like mushroom chunks worked like a charm in between perfectly baked sesame sandwich bread. This goes into the category of “making vegetarian food a hearty affair.”

I am mad......ly in love with 52 sandwich shack sandwiches; generous ingredients that are so tasty. Did I mention how my (Japanese-tasting) pulled pork had traces of fat making the sandwich just so damn great. And the abundant amount of melted pale yellow cheese; then the signature grilled brioche bread.
Another thing about all the sandwiches I’ve tried here is the well thought pairing of ingredients- for example pickles to ease the richness of cheese and pulled pork, checked.
