This popular noodle stall at this food centre is always long queue in the morning, and get it’s recognition with Michelin Guide’s Bib Gourmand.
The char siew already run out when I was there on Sunday late morning. So replaced with shredded chicken instead.
Love the texture of their egg noodles, as well as their wanton. Simple yet tasty.
There are 3 popular wanton mee stalls here at bukit merah view.
All 3 stalls have snaking queues on a sunday breakfast
Yong chun WTM is one of these popular stalls. And the queue here is the longest of the 3.
Noodles were springy here too, char siew was a little thick and not as tender as I would like.
But the Wanton here is very good.
The chilli here also rather shiok
I feel bad to say this, but this Michelin Bib Gourmand wanton mee was the most ordinary wanton mee I've tried. I rushed here before work some more. Apparently their trademark is they're old school, so yes, their wanton mee was the typical nameless kind you could buy anywhere in the old days.
I'm sorry but people who don't understand the hype really just cannot appreciate greatness. They're consistent, seeing how many return customers are here
Some people say their char siew are dry. To some extent, that is true. However, it's sliced thinly and possess a strong marination if you chew, which works great w their noodles. Their noodles are seriously one of a kind, very artisanal and the texture is almost bouncy, that's how unique it is. The sweet mildly spicy sauce works with the above and the good pork lard to deliver flavourbombs.
Wantons were something else as well. Skin was similarly artisanal, supple and firm yet still slippery enough. Minced meat filling was tender enough, bouncy as well, and had a mild salty flavour in a lovely way. Almost top tier stuff
On a weekday, queue is about 15mins but they're very reasonable because they take orders in 10 people's advance along the queue, after which you are free to come back and collect your food.
The only complaint would be that the portion is small, but for a Michelin guide place w clearly high quality everything, it's only reasonable they reduce portions to make sure prices are such(other places would have double the price for bigger portions)
Arrived at this Michelin Bib Gourmand stall at 11am and the queue was already 10 persons. Ordered $4.50 medium portion Wantan noodles dry with chilli.
Waited about 10 minutes before it was my turn. The clear soup had umami taste and the pepper powder I added. The noodles were Al dente enough but not springy. In fact there was too much sauce stemming from the water collected by the noodles during blanching. Something to be said about those “flying Wantan Mee”. Besides showmanship, the move ensures excess water is drained to avoid affecting the texture of the noodles.
The chilli sauce they used was the sweet type. There was some heat in there but not the murderous type. Their char siew was forgettable, being dry and pitifully in quantity. And the portion for $4.50 is really enough only for the smallest appetites.
But all is forgiven when you take one bite into their Wantans. These are larger than normal, almost the size of shui jiao. Inside were chunks of water chestnuts mixed with minced pork. Yummy!
And their pickled green chilli are the best I have had so far this year. Crunchy, tangy, couple with soya sauce, it’s the perfect dip for the wantans. And if you add a couple slices into your noodles, it helps alleviate the sweet chilli sauce.
No chance to try their chicken feet noodles so I must come back another day. Early in the morning, according to an uncle queueing behind me!
