You have to make prior appointment to enter this distorted world and walk-ins are strictly not welcomed. The vibe here is just so contagious and drinks so unique that it transports you into an entire new universe upon stepping into the world of ShaungXi.

This lesser known bar in Chinatown is one of its kind. By that, we mean it sports gorgeous vintage vibes, delicious drinks and a no-profit system. The bar opens only by reservation in advance, and everyone who works there do so voluntarily so that all proceeds can be contributed to operational costs as well as a fund to help emerging artist friends. Meant to be a happy place to gather (Shuang Xi translates to double happiness in Mandarin), this is just the spot to take your favourite friends on a good night out. What's more, the prices are easy on the pocket! Cocktails begin from RM24 for a single shot, RM32 for a double and so on, allowing patrons to pay for their drink's worth. Try the Best Before, a summery concoction of Malibu rum and pineapple juice. Or let the other intriguing names surprise you, be it the Familiar Stranger or the Mood Swing. Alternatively, kick back with a bottle of Tsingtao beer (RM12) befitting of the bar's old-world charms.
Avg price per person: RM30

The cocktail menu boasts some Asian tropical flavours with ingredients such as pineapple, ginger and lime. The Best Before (pineapple + malibu) transports you to some tropical island. Ask them to make it less sweet, or amp up the rum to a double shot. I kinda forgot what was in the Neither Do I, but there were some passionfruit in it. I’m 110% sure when they made this drink, at some point the conversation might have went “I can’t remember what was in that drink.” “Neither do I.” Drink up.
P.S. Cash only!

Perched above one of the old shophouses, Shuang Xi (which translates to Double Happiness) is truly a bar unlike any other. Open for close to two months now, this is probably the most under-the-radar bar in KL, and one I wish would remain hidden! Having said that, I really enjoyed my night here. Heads up — for a bar that claims it is #notspeakeasy, it’s really darn hard to find this place lor. Thankful that they have a Facebook page where reservations are highly encouraged to be made via DM. The location instructions are as vague as “find Public Bank”. Run by a brother-sister duo (the former a photographer and vintage collector, the latter a tattoo artist) and a few friends, no one will make you feel more at home in a bar than these guys. They are responsible for the welcoming vibes here with an impressive collection of vintage furniture and knick-knacks to match. I think it’s important for me to note that these guys also work voluntarily. Where the money earned from your drinks goes only to rental, supplies and a small foundation for young, emerging artists in the city. So yes, tipple away without feeling guilty!
