Ending my incredibly long and exhausting work week with a delicious barachirashi with ikura [$32.76, without ikura it’s $22++] 🍱 The red vinegar sushi rice was so good and so was the fragrant chrysanthemum flowers and shiso. Everythint was so yum. While I’m not a fan of tamago, the tamago’s flavour and texture in this dish was so perfect and it was just the right amount of sweetness. Felt like I was momentarily transported to Tokyo’s fish market honestly (fun fact, the sashimi is from Toyosu Market!). Definitely recommend this casual Japanese place, there’s some affordable and some premium Japanese food on the menu that surely won’t disappoint any foodie!

Glad I got to finally try @sg.nozomi with @aditi_95, so good, no regrets, food is great and service is good. Will come back for more.

Best soup ever! Creamy and delicious and warm. Love the apple juice too, tastes like cloudy apple juice from UK.

Hard boiled egg, daikon radish, chikuwa, fried fish cake with burdock, konjac, mochi kinchaku, horseradish, kombu seaweed

I love oden and have been wanting to try the one at Sanpoutei Ramen [$11.80++] for the longest time (the quest to find delicious oden is never-ending) 🍢

Queued up for > half an hour just to get a table (not sure why the restaurant is so crowded on a weekday evening but I guess due to social distancing measures, there are fewer tables) and then I waited another half an hour or more for my dinner 😓 Feel like the staff could have at least told me how long I would have to wait for my meal to arrive. My dad finished eating his dinner long before my food appeared. I’m guessing all the ingredients are frozen in their respective packets and so they had to defrost / heat up / boil all the ingredients etc.

The ‘mustard’ is actually horseradish and it’s extremely strong. I could feel it in not just my nose/sinus but also my brain (LEGIT NOT KIDDING YOU CAN GOOGLE THIS IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE ME!!) 😓 It actually also fell into the broth so it was kind of like consuming wasabi soup. But otherwise, the broth was delicious. I also enjoyed the chikuwa and daikon and fishcake with burdock. The moneybag wasn’t so amazing and didn’t have any veggies. It hd mochi inside I believe, but I’m not a big fan of the texture of the fishcake/tofu(?)

I would say this oden is good, not bad, well priced. But the waiting time is quite long, so that’s something to consider! Personally I would say the best oden I’ve had so far in SG would be at Shukuu Izakaya. This is only the 2nd restaurant in Singapore where I’ve had oden. I believe another Japanese restaurant in Tanjong Pagar also specialises in oden but I’ve yet to visit - it’s called The Public Izakaya. Will try that out next time!

Wanted to try as many new places as possible while I’m off work. Since the Public Izakaya was closing soon (I wanted to get oden), I ended up at Imakatsu (which specialises in tonkatsu and employs Japanese waitstaff). Felt like having something hot so I had udon w/ free flow salad after my last pilates class for the year 🤗

Today’s cafe hopping adventure takes us to Grand Jeté Cafe & Bar at Takashimaya. It’s been here for a few years but I’ve never eaten here. Been dying to try their Tonkatsu Sandwich [$13++] which looked so yummy online. We ordered an Earl Grey tea [$8++] too. The tonkatsu was really delicious, it didn’t have any gristle or fat. Felt a bit let down by the cabbage, it wasn’t cold and super crispy like I expected. Didn’t really think the sesame fit in with the sandwich and found the bread a tad chewy. The fries were nice but a little salty. The tea was concentrated and bitter but the waitstaff were very nice and topped it up with hot water. The homely ambiance reminds me of the fictional cafe in Before The Coffee Gets Cold. An ideal cafe for a chat with friends or a brief respite away from the crowds.
