Char also serves a good roast pork but unlike the char siew, it's really hard to justify paying so much more when you can get comparable roast pork elsewhere.
I was really surprised to learn that Char is celebrating its 9th anniversary this year! I mean it didn't seem that long ago when I made the trek down to its OG outlet at Guillermard Road soon after its launch. The char siew was excellent but I did wonder how long it would be able to survive when its kopitiam competitors were able to serve the same dish (albeit less shiok) at a fraction of what they were charging.
I am glad to be proven wrong though. I was back a couple of months ago at their new outlet at Jalan Besar. The char siew is still excellent - soft, tender and juicy with a sweet savoury glaze. I do wish though that their char siew had a little crunchier char but that's me nit-picking.
At $35 for 200g each of their signature char siew and roast pork, it remains pricey. But I guess it's okay once in a while!
The peppery Pig Stomach’s Anxin Chicken Soup is a comforting pot that will be a great bowl before the mains.
Other new dishes include the Tornado Butter Egg Prawns and Spicy Sichuan Chicken with Vanilla Ice Cream anyone? The ice cream helps to calm down the spice level while adding a cooling touch to the dish.

The Fortune Set Menu ($72++ per pax, minimum 4 persons) is an 8-course meal that starts with the Prosperity Salmon Fruit Yusheng as a refreshing appetiser before the sweet-savoury Double-boiled Apple Soup with Pork, Wild Yam and Dried Scallops. The Steamed Silver Cod Fish with XO Sauce brings the umami factor while the House-cured Chinese Sausage & Duck Fried Rice adds to the wok hei. The piece de resistance of Char’s Double Roast which comes with the Signature Char Siew & Free-range Soya Chicken, is the unanimous favourite.
The meal continues with the Braised Abalone with Sea Cucumber and Chinese Mushrooms, Sautéed Fresh Ang Kar Prawns and ended with the Peach Resin Pudding.
Went to Char at the end of January 2022 for a celebratory birthday dinner😇 Ordered the Double Roast mix of Char Siew and Roast Pork, along with their Hot and Sour Soup, Yong Chow Fried Rice and Iced Chinese Teas😋 The total bill came out to be $50+ for 2 pax and I really enjoyed the food there!! Honestly... its the best char siew and roast pork that I ever ate and it just melts in your mouth😍 10/10 for food and service and would definitely visit again!!
