The carbonara is really good. You have to break the egg yolk and mix it with the spaghetti, it would taste nicer. (That's what the waitress told me.) the price should be around 10-12+ bucks.
Nunsaram (which means "Snowman" in Korean) is the latest in the wave of Korean dessert cafes that have sprouted in the past few months. Specialising in Bingsu, the cafe serves the usual flavours you can expect such as Injeolmi, Strawberry and Black Sesame. Go for the Green Tea Bingsu ($13.90) or the Mango Bingsu ($15.90). You can also find sides such as Garlic Cheese Bread ($7.90) if you crave something savoury.
Bing Go Jung is a new Korean Dessert House by Ju Shin Jung, and takes up a separated area that used to be a dining area for the Korean BBQ restaurant. The Injeolmi Bingsu is their specialty, which is finely shaved ice with milk, soya bean powder and rice cakes inside, served with condensed milk at the side for those who want a bigger degree of sweetness to their dessert. Think of it as a Korean version of our Ice Kachang, which is delightful on a hot sunny day. Should serve two pretty well.
Trying out this new Korean Dessert Cafe named Nunsongyee at 45 Burghley Drive. Snow Flake Ice with condensed milk (served at the side), soy powder, chopped almonds and rice cake within, this Bingsu had shaved ice that was pretty fine and consistent as it even had a fluffy texture. Almonds and soy powder creates a peanut-like taste, though not as deep because the soy flavour takes over. Pretty worth the steep price of $14.90 for its quality, and could be shared within two to three pax.
Bingsu was more Ice Kachang-ish here; the ice was shaved more coarse than being snow-like, plus the Sweet Potato did not really taste of anything much apart from its colour; probably doused in too much milk. Vanilla ice-cream was smooth, and the sugared nuts were pretty interesting.
Two pieces of buttered bread topped with cheese, spicy chicken chunks and potato chunks and a layer of rice cake in the middle. Rice Cake was rather chewy; could be described as the same texture of a marshmallow or stringy cheese, while we wished for the chicken chunks to be less dry despite being moderately spiced and well complimented with the cheese.
My very first Bingsu I had ever tasted was the Injeolmi Bingsu at Bing Go Jung when they had first opened at Guillemard Road. Quality at the Bukit Timah Plaza outlet was really reminiscent of the one at Guillemard Road; shaved ice was pretty fine and loved the nutty flavours that came with the soy powder, with chewy rice cakes to bite. Sure, there are now strong competitors like O'ma Spoon and Nunsongyee around, but their's isn't too far away in terms of quality and definitely more accessible to those staying in the north and the west.
From O'ma Spoon Korean Dessert Cafe outside the food court at Level 4. Their Injeolmi Toast was pretty decent with crusty toast with rice cake in between, covered with soy powder and served with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream drizzled in chocolate sauce. Its decently nutty, and the ice-cream drizzled in chocolate sauce seemed to exude a hazelnut flavour when combined. Pretty liked the rice cake served in between too; chewy but also had a toasty flavour as though it was grilled.
From O'ma Spoon Korean Dessert Cafe outside the food court at Level 4. This is the two person portion, and comes with milk-based shaved ice with green tea powder, Azuki red beans and green tea ice-cream atop. Green Tea flavour was evident throughout and the ice was shaved till really fine so it was smooth and melt-in-the-mouth without having to bite. Recommended.
While I have my reservations about the inclusion of the oxtail (suitably tender, but methinks it’s too much meat on mah plate), this was nonetheless the perfect brunch platter for two on a weekend morning. Haughtily basking in the limelight (and rightfully claiming the throne) is the Crown Puff Pastry, a magically flaky and buttery triumph of a puff pastry so memorable, your lips will whimper yearnfully for more in-mouth buttery melt-age for days after. Kudos all round to everybody else – from the absolutely massive chicken sausage stick that you can use for mini golf to the smoky bacon and plump juicy mushrooms, this breakfast is a spectacular winner. 4.4/5 [This was a hosted meal, courtesy of Crown Bakery & Cafe.]
