In the most ulu places, these restaurants can still thrive. Something must have gone right. Go before it's too late!

Still an amateur at making the egg look slurplicious, pardon me. On the other hand, beef curry udon for $8.50 NETT, soft boiled egg for an extra $1

Pho Hanh focuses on unpretentious, flavourful, comforting, Vietnamese food. This unassuming restaurant along Joo Chiat with a humble storefront and decor whips up some great classics. Go for the Special Beef Noodle Soup ($7) - a light soup with robust flavours, filled with generous servings of sliced beef, beef balls and brisket. Also try their Lot Lot Roll with Fried Beef (a simplified version of Bò lá lốt), fried beef wrapped in fragrant herbal betel leaf, a nice treat.

While it's almost certain that the Hougang and Bedok communities are already well-acquainted with this neighborhood favourite, the rest of the city might not yet be. The food is cheap and tasty, and the ambience friendly and relaxing. Highly recommended dishes include the Pad Thai at $5, thick-based Tom Yam at $6 (really hot) and stir-fried Mince Pork with Basil ($6).

For good dim sum sold at coffeeshop prices, many come here for their super-flowy liu sha bao, but items such as the siew mai or har kow may not be up to restaurant standards. Also try their steamed beancurd roll and steamed carrot cake. Bear in mind it's located in an eating house, so don't expect comforts!

Situated at the basement of Concorde Hotel, this Korean stall is very popular at lunch and dinner times. The spicy chicken soup set comes highly recommended at $6.50, along with their potato pancake at $3.50. If you're in town and craving some authentic Korean food, look no further than the distinct blue signboard with a line of people queuing for some good food.

Serving huge portions, be sure to share your food here at Gold Food. With most dishes priced below $10, this value-for-money Thai restaurant is great for some mango salad, green curry and tom yam. Located conveniently in Sunshine Plaza, it's a great hidden gem for cheap, tasty Thai food in town.

Full-time foodie.
