Hidden gem in Jalan Besar coffeeshop. It’s authentic Indonesian ayam penyet, served with a side yellow tasty soup and fiery sambal. The spiciness is in-your face kind. πŸ‘ŠπŸ”₯ Be prepared to order drink before eat the sambal. Shiokk.

Downside, the waiting time could be quite long although not many people there. The lady owner is Indonesian, she’s the sambal queen maker. Kudos for her sambal πŸ‘

The chicken was crispy, tender & not dry; could be pulled apart easily as well. The accompanying homemade chilli was also excellent, spicy with hints of sweetness. I also love the crispy bits of batter, so sinful but yet so good!

We also ordered the bawal penyet (fried flattened pomfret fish) ($12); the fish was good & super crispy with no fishy smell.

Found a stall selling good ayam penyet located in a coffee shop along the busy street of Jalan Besar (opposite Sim Lim Tower).

The chicken was crispy & tender; could be pulled apart easily as well. The accompanying homemade chilli was also excellent, spicy with hints of sweetness. I also love the crispy bits of batter, so sinful but yet so Sedap!

We also ordered the bawal penyet (fried flattened pomfret fish) ($12); the fish was super crispy as well with no fishy smell.

Never know I can find a Ayam Penyet stall here until someone shared about it. Located inside the coffee shop along Jalan Besar, opposite Sim Lim Tower. The stall owners was really friendly, so feel free to ask for more chilli if you want.

Definitely one of my favourite places to eat to date.

The rice is soft, just how I like it. Even the chicken just tears apart easily enough to be eaten with just fork and spoon. Everything is freshly made. Served while it’s still warm. The sambal is the best part. The lingering after effects. The food is affordable too.

Located at a walking distance from Jalan Besar MRT.

The chicken is surprisingly tender inside πŸ˜πŸ‘and topped with crunchy batter bits so flavourful. The chicken kept me wanting for more, tho the rice was just rather lifeless and starchy. Chili packs a nice punch!!

Crispy, juicy chicken topped generously w crunchy bits! πŸ’• A hearty & awfully satisfying lunch that's sure to induce a minor food coma after but is so worth it! :) Pro tip: Do ask the friendly owners for their special chili! Owned and run by a friendly Muslim couple, this halal stall in an old and very narrow corner kopitiam offers a small variety of dishes but it doesn't matter because I was there to try their Surabaya-style Ayam Penyet.
The husband named Abang Batman (and that's a story you need to ask him in person) is clearly the chattier of the two. He was more than happy to share with me what makes their Ayam Penyet special. So through a show-and-tell style, I learned that it all starts with boiling the chicken pieces in a fragrant gravy for 3 hours until the bones are tender enough to be eaten. They must then be drained dry before being dipped in batter and deep-fried in extremely hot oil. His wife is the sambal queen as she grinds the ingredients by hand using an Indonesian style pestle and mortar (it is different from the bowl-shaped kind used by my Peranakan grandma and mum).
I am not sure if I was imagining things but the piping hot crispy chicken and tofu tasted extra shiok with freshly-made sambal. Interestingly, spiciness was not as intense as I thought it'd be, which is good news for those who've set their tongues on fire before at other Ayam Penyet places. It's also a bit sweeter due to the use of fresh tomatoes and sugar. The soup that's included is different from the typical clear ones as well.
If you love exploring food made with passion and an ambience that seems to have hit the pause button a couple of decades ago, you should pay a visit to "Impian Wahyu" at 49 Jalan Besar (junction of Dickson Road).
Abang Batman told me they also do catering but there's a minimum order for 15 pax. Seems quite a few groups of savvy tourists have already done so.
