Let the school holiday begins! Celebrating my mum’s birthday at Beng Hiang that serves up Hokkien dishes with a nostalgic feel! We ordered all her much-loved dishes including cold dish [spiced sausage & fried prawn balls, salad prawns, cold jelly fish, fried shark’s fin with scrambled egg & crab meat], fish maw soup, “kong ba bao” and “orh nee” with medley of retro songs playing in the background from her favourite late Cantopop singer, Anita Mui. My mum who is in her 70s, commented that the taste and quality of the dishes we ordered, reminded her of what we used to eat when I was a kid back in the Eighties. Here’s to plenty of good food for the holidays!

Besides the restaurant’s all-you-can-eat ala carte dim sum and dinner buffet that is available daily, their menu includes an ala carte option which is suitable for takeaway and delivery. The dishes we have tasted included their Signature Hokkien Noodles ($10/$14/$18) which is braised in a savoury dark broth made from pork bones and prawns, together with a medley of seafood.

There is also the Fish Maw Thick Soup ($32/$50/$80) prepared with real crab meat that came hot while the Kong Ba Bao ($13.80/$25) is a crowd pleaser with the wonderfully braised pork belly paired with the soft steamed buns. The Ngoh Hiang ($12/$24) appetisers of spiced sausage and fried prawn balls are entirely handmade with the fillings consisting of meat and prawn in a five spice powder mix. One size, 10 pcs(i asked for less buns)

Honestly didnt live up to expectations. The lean meat was dry and rather tough, but the fattier pieces fared better and gave us a glimpse into what could have been. Hopefully it's just inconsistent standards, as i dont believe a dish of this quality could become the signature dish for a restaurant. The sauce had dark flavours and it wasnt very sweet at all.

This dish is also one of our must order and hasn't disappointed thus far. Wobbly, tender and juicy meat with a delicate balance between meat and fat sandwiched within a bun, brings back a lot of childhood memories ◡̈

Featuring wobbly, fatty, juicy meat with a mountain of bao behind. I've been eating this since I was a kid, and I kid you not, it's one of the best around, and it has been consistent all these years. The pork brisket has been braised for hours, leaving the meat tender, succulent and full of flavour. Throw in some cilantro into your pork bun for a refreshing taste in every bite.

This restaurant also serves up many of my favourite go to dishes, such as hei zo, oyster omelette and hokkien style noodles. It's a family favourite, and I hope it'll be yours too.
