Botak Liquor Bar’s cocktails are art in a glass. The gin-based Jasmine & Tarragon on tap is a gorgeous blend of suze, jasmine cordial, tarragon, lemon bitters and a zesty fizz while the Nangka & Grapefruit is a delicious tropical mashup of tequila blanco, grapefruit soda and homemade jackfruit liquor, drunk together with a lick of the charcoal salt like you would with a margarita. The bar ain’t wallet-friendly so come here when you’re feeling spendy.

Any newbie that serves recipes inspired by familial traditions gets my tick of approval. For its location, lunch is affordable with nothing going beyond the RM20 mark. We had no complaints on the food here — fork-tender protein with flavours that hit all the right spots. Service is friendly but the space is tiny. So go early before the office crowd flock over.

Coffee and simple fare at this cafe cum event space which will soon also welcome working nomads looking for something temporary above the main dining hall.

Tucked in a neighbourhood sports complex with a dated and rustic interior, you’d be forgiven to think that Out of Africa would simply be your average, run-of-the-mill restaurant. Serving South African soul food with exotic but delicious-sounding creations such as the Ostrich Carpaccio and Tongue Kalahari (pan-seared ox tongue with mustard sauce), it’s the chef’s special and most-written-about Venison Pie that blew my mind here. Crispy, golden pastry casing packed with a delicious filling of medium cubes of succulent venison in delicious mushroom gravy… this is comfort food at its best. Totally unexpected melt-in-your-mouth goodness, nailing great flavour and texture. Who would have thought!
Couple this with the fact that the restaurant is child-friendly with a playground on deck, and a Kudu bar with live sports on screen for the adults, this really could be anyone’s favourite hang out spot.

Restoran Bubur Goreng seems to be the optimal spot for a bowl of fried porridge goodness. Still bustling at 11:30pm, the restaurant delivers without taking too long of a wait. The silky, warm porridge is topped with fried chinese cruller, dried cuttlefish, cubes of pork lard and yam. Add the signature green belacan chilli to give this a real fiery kick!

Had the Jackfruit flavour and it tastes as close to eating the real fruit on its own! So yummy with a nutty aftertaste (cashew as the nut base for this). Went back again to try their other flavours and their Salted Chocolate, Mocha Almond Choc Chip and French Vanilla flavours are all fast favourites. A complete dessert game changer.
p.s. Emphasizing on natural ingredients, be mindful that some flavours may need getting used to such as the Black Sesame which is hard to explain but tastes more and more delicious every bite you take. So stick around, it's worth the try!

Not strictly a breakfast place but they do a mean classic fry up of eggs, sausages, mushroom, hash brown and beans in tomato sauce with toasts on the side. The space is trendy, the portions are large (a peek at my neighbour’s Beefy Burger looks quite a-filling) — the food doesn’t blow your mind but it sure does fill up the stomach. For non-coffee lovers, the Hojicha latte will warm you straight up this rainy season.

Birch knows how to treat their guests to a comforting brunch fare that excels in both quantity and quality. A dish that is not just easy on the eyes, the Shakshuka is a true brunch fan’s delight. The flavourful skillet dish of baked eggs, harissa spiced tomato and red pepper stew, Greek feta and crispy kale, goes so amazingly well with the slice of to-die-for toasted sourdough (crunchy crust, soft centre!). Definitely not for sharing! Heh.

Opened by the same team behind Mezze and Huckleberry, new kid-on-the-block Birch knows a thing or more about what it takes to brunch our city’s socks off! The interior fit-out is bright and airy with hanging plants and comfortable banquettes, making brunches at this spot a true stylish affair. Indulgence is the go here so don’t stop with just one dish. For starters, the lemon ricotta hotcakes is no joke. Stacks of super fluffy hotcakes with a surprise ricotta in the centre, topped with a killer homemade honeycomb butter, maple syrup and bananas. So satisfying!

Replacing old Plan B is sparkly new Bistro Benji’s; a welcoming addition to Bangsar’s dining scene and the ever-evolving BIG Group! The menu doesn’t go far off from its predecessor, drawing Malaysian inspiration to create a fusion menu with signature items such as the Pan Mee Impasta and Johor Laksa, served in a chic, nautical atmosphere. Both delicious and contemporary is the Pan Mee Impasta (the waitress’ top pick) of spaghettini sautéed with chilli and soy shrimp mushrooms, fried anchovies and roasted chilli flakes, plated and topped with a poached egg, sesame and coriander. And of course, a slice of cake from Ben’s Bake Shop is always a good idea. Come here for a casual breakfast, lunch or after-work dinner, solo or with your best buds.

If you’re looking for a little sustenance/pick-me-up as the day wears on, Analog's sourdoughs is your answer. Put on your lose pants and find comfort in their sloppy joe’s (with egg) — my absolute go-to. It’s filling and messy, and no one’s going to judge you for indulging with your hands.
