I believe that as heartlanders, we would have at least one favourite neighbourhood cake shop/ bakery that we frequent. The whole allure of it, I think, is its wide selection, convenience, and low prices. NGT Confectionery [喜樂] at Block 504 Hong Kah Point is certainly my favourite. Back when I was in school, my parents will get breads or cakes from this bakery for my breakfast the next day, like hot dog breads and chiffon cakes. I will always remember the times when they got me birthday cakes with those weird, inedible cartoon figures on it (previous birthdays saw Hello Kitty and Doraemon). There are also other wonderful memories associated with this bakery, for example, my mom would wait for me at my school gate with a warm waffle with chocolate spread, just so I could eat as we walked home together, because she was always afraid that I would be hungry. Of course, we still buy their cakes now, and when Chinese New Year comes around, we make it a point to buy their homemade goodies! #hawkerpedia
What makes a good popiah? Well... I have never been particular about popiahs until the day my dad got me one from Block 496 Coffeeshop, Coffee United (same coffee shop as the dry mee hoon kueh I posted previously) a few years back. I find that it is surprisingly difficult to get good popiah here in the west though of course there is no lack of choices. I always thought that since popiah is a healthy food (i think it is anyway) it could taste sort of bland so all those that I had in the past really pale in comparison to the ones I had from the stall at Block 496 Coffeeshop. Just behind the stall selling coffee, the popiah here is definitely not bland and is often spotted with a queue. My favourite popiah stall thus far as the filling is moist, crunchy and packed tightly with the thin popiah skin!

From Cafe Ma Maison, a takeaway stand selling fruit tarts and cream puffs from Ma Maison at Liang Court.
It's hard not to fight against temptation and go for Dulcet & Studio's cream puffs at Liang Court, but I would say it gets a bit easier to decide once one tries them both. Dulcet & Studio does the pastry better in my opinion; the Choux pastry definitely takes the cake for me as compared to Ma Maison's pie crust pastry, but if I am craving to eat a cream puff for the cream, I might probably want to consider Cafe Ma Maison's. For instance, the Cream here is way more smooth and velvety, while the vanilla cream is just so aromatic — that rich cream speckled with vanilla beans is just hard to resist.

Number one, caramalised onions and gorgonzola blue cheese was an amazing combination with the beef patty. Plus that touch of bacon 🤤. However, together with the thousand island sauce, it can get slightly jelat as you reach the end of the burger and will almost definitely ditch the burger buns, no matter how soft and fluffy they are
.
🍴
Number two, burrata sits in the centre like a surprise centre together with a roasted tomato half. The pesto sauce with beef patty, makes this burger a slightly lighter option than number one. .
🍴
Number three, the most fragrant of all 4 burgers due to the jack cheese. Green chili gave an extra kick making you want to eat more as you work through your burger.
.
🍴
Number four, yellowfin tuna burger. The burger I chose because I'm adventurous and different like that. Strong smell of fishiness as I put the burger to my mouth. Crispy onion rings, turned soft a bit too fast. And the aftertaste of tofu didn't go well with me. Maybe it would be better w a slab of seared tuna? 🤷🏻♀️
.
🍴
We also got a mixed platter of curly fries and onion rings. The self fried onion rings has a very thin batter, so it's best to eat them fast. Curly fries are almost like macdonalds but more expensive 😜.
.
🍴
My verdict is stick to the beef burgers and you won't go wrong. I can't place which is the best because they each have their own unique strengths. But at $14 per burger, it's a steal for the big fluffy soft buns and delicious fillings (except for yellowfin tuna 🤣) The burger alone will definitely leave you full! .

I love tater tots. I love okonomiyaki. Bam! What's not to like about this appetizer?
Great as a snack after class and I love how generous they are with the tater tots. Yummos. #Burpproved
As much as I love Three Buns' burgers, the rice bowls (available all day) were too tempting to resist. So I ventured over to the Asian side with an order of "Burning Rice".
This was unlike any fried rice I'd ever had before. Firstly, not that it's visible but there's a 100gm patty of U.K. beef lying in wait under that heap of melted cheddar cheese-blanketed rice. Plus enough sauces (think fiery Korean gojuchang, ketchup, dashi mayo) and crispy fried shallots to to lay the tastiest siege on the tastebuds.
My apologies for making it even harder to decide what to have when you're here. You can blame it on @happygreedyfoodie for posting about this dish in the very first place 😆😆
It sounds like the best of both worlds when you have two kinds of toasted sourdough in a set but personally, I favoured the sweet over the savoury as its mix of creamy ricotta, honey and aromatic fresh thyme suited my tastebuds to a T. For some reason, I didn't find the savoury toast, which came with smashed avocado, mixed seeds, Maldon salt and smoked paprika, all that appetising. Which's odd as I usually lean towards that. However I am sure there are others who prefer it over the sweet.
Our side of the table were almost done with it and eyeing the other side's which I politely, almost-shouted, that if they weren't gonna eat it we can help them finish it (thanks for obliging HAHAHAH I was armed w a fork ready to stab y'all ok keeeeding) but honestly it was one of the best fries I've had in awhile!

The combination of sweet and savoury from the maple soy, sriracha, kewpie mayo was so good, and the fact that it's not greasy, so crisp and thinly cut doesn't feel like I'm consuming unhealthy carbs which is bad for diet if you're on one. CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP, definitely will order this again when I'm back!

Yummy stuff. I especially liked that the Chicken Katsu was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside, all without the usual greasy, fatty texture 👍🏻 This small Japanese diner only has three items on their menu, very easy to decide. All meals come with free-flow rice and miso soup (average S$14-16).
From The Affogato Bar; newly-opened at Cluny Court serving up their signature dessert Affogato and fresh hand-rolled Bagels — mention the word Affogato and pre-NS XW (aka Fat XW) would be pleased; possibly one of my favourite desserts before my enlistment.
The Carota Carota is one of their "standard" line of Affogato — think of Carrot Cake meets coffee for this one as it comes with Carrot Cake Ice-Cream, Carrot Cake, Walnuts, Homemade Cream Cheese and Macademia. Going for a spoon of all of the elements combined, the elements indeed felt like a good Carrot Cake; cinnamony flavours that binds well with the tangy cream cheese with bits of nuts to crunch and a fluffy, moist sponge — a dessert that was already indulging on its own. Pour in the espresso, and it suddenly adds a hint of aromatic earthiness from the coffee, soaking the sponge and integrating with the other components — it's like as though one is simply enjoying a cup of Long Black with a slice of carrot cake on the side. Looking forward to be back to try the other combinations!
Available from Monday to Friday, at $25++ , this is definitely value for money. 🍴
There's a huge variety, and definitely the hot favourites of dim sum like siew mai, har gow, liu sha bao etc. The crystal skin chives dumpling was great but other dumpling skins like xiao long bao and cheong fan etc were a bit too thick.

Highly recommended to me by a vegetarian, so I set my bar quite high when trying this Falafel salad ($8) from Pita Tree. And I was literally blown away.
The mashed chickpeas were encased in a crispy (almost crunchy) skin, peppered with sesame seed which gives it a nice smell. The Falafel was freshly cooked and not too oily, which was really nice.
