Along Circular Road, you'll spot this snaking queue for 109's ytf! Don't be intimidated by the long queue cos it moves fairly fast.
Pick minimum 6 pieces and tell them how you want your ytf to be done - soup, dry and laksa. They also sell fried rice and fried chicken wings! Do note that their dry version isn't your usual dry ytf, drowned in sweet and chili sauces. Theirs is ladened with a light brown gravy, looking really similar to that of lormee!
The gravy is savoury and rich in taste, but not overly salty! It's smooth (no clumps of starch) and not very thick. I could sip on it! It coats every strand of my kwaytiao so perfectly. Usually kwaytiao clumps into a huge mess in such gooey base. But guess what? I could pick up each strand of my noodles, slurping them up happily. THE GRAVY AND KWAYTIAO IS LIKE A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN! โค
Their tofu tastes fresh (both the square and triangle ones) and soft. I'm loving this place and i can't wait to visit them again. *TIP* they've seats available on the 2nd storey! airconditioned ๐
Price point: My bowl of 7 pieces + noodles, dry version, costed $5.80. Pretty acceptable given the location!
The ambience at this outlet is perfect for afternoon tea! Or even post-dinner catchups with your girlfriends.
They partnered with the Masterchef SG runner up, Genevieve Lee for a few dishes. &I've gotten their Reimagined Kaya Toast to try! Also, ordered their banana chocolate cake, iced latte &crunchy apple tea.
The Kaya Toast was deconstructed - chunks of pistachio chiffon cake, slices of airy bread toast crisps (they're meringue but much more crispy than usual!) and a scoop of gula melaka ice cream. The pistachio flavour hits me first, really pleasant and nutty. I appreciate the more coarse texture of the chiffon, so that the entire flavout profile is more dimensional. It soaks up the coconut cream and gula melaka ice cream well! A bite on the meringue makes you think twice if it's a yakun toast or a meringue ๐ On the sweeter side, so it'll pair well with white tea!
It's located at The Poiz (postal code 347694), right beside the exit of Potong Pasir MRT. They're newly opened! (soooo many congratulatory flower stands)
When we passed by on a Saturday night, only 3 slices of their durian mousse cake was left, along with their MSW ice cream and puffs. The owner was inviting and let us try their ice cream. It has the durian fibres (REAL DURIAN!) in them! thou the durian flavour could somehow be enriched alittle further. As we wanted to rest our legs, we gt a slice of their mousse cake.
The cake has a 2 layers of sponge which is ohsoolight! The chantilly cream and durian have the perfect marriage - you could taste the durian bits and fibres, yet the cream made it still light on your palate. I've never imagined that a durian cake can be so light, good for after-meals! ๐
&Not to forget, those crumbs-looking thingy on the cake are actually ROASTED MACADAMIAS! SAY WHUTTTT? so atas! They're lightly salted and really provides a good crunch. Added dimension to the cake's texture!
Served to your table with a small wood plank below it. It has charcoal that's burning from within. The soup's boiling and there's lots of wongbok (looking like they've been cooked for some time, soft and have absorbed all the goodness of the broth), chunks of red grouper, seaweed. Dive deeper and you'll find big pieces of yam (OMG MY FAV IN THIS POT)!
The soup is addictive, exuding the light ginger taste. It tastes almost as thou some carnation milk has been added, but no. It's pure goodness boiled for a long time i guess! I also found some small bits of preserved vege in the soup (those added to congee). They're totally not stingy with the ingredients. This costs $25 and soup is refillable! But, i find that the refilled broth tastes much lighter, probably as the fish and vege werent boiled continuously in it. Again, the chilli dip in light orangey red lits up the taste of the fish.
ANOTHER MUST ORDER HERE. If you're in a group of 3 or 4, just go for the medium one at $30! I enjoyed sipping on the soup even under the hot weather. Try it &i hope you'll like it as much as i do!
A whiff of its slightly sweet gravy makes me drool. Give the egg a poke and stir it in with the rice noodles!
It has strong wokhei &every spoonful has a good amount of minced pork and crunchy chopped vegetable stems. The gravy is on the thick side, coating each mee tai bak mega well. As it's largely flavoured with dark soya sauce, it can get alittle sweet after multiple spoonfuls. Add alittle of the vinegar chilli (the one in orangey red colour) to the noodles AND WOAH, REFRESHING CHANGE! You'll be able to help yourself to another serving.
The claypot mee tai bak in small serves 1-2 and costs $5! A MUST ORDER i would say &sth different from the yellow hokkien noodles!
In the foreground is the Bread Board with generous slices of parma ham, 2 thick slices of sourdough toast, 2 poached eggs, marinated goat cheese &half of a fully ripened avocado. The parma ham tasted a little woody and im guessing that it's dry-cured. The texture is more chewy and i love this for a better pairing with sourdough. It's unlike the usual parma ham on your pizzas and those seen in supermarkets as those tend to be thin, moist and taste more on the raw side. The goat cheese has a light fermented taste when you first eat it. Afterwhich, it overpowers your whole mouth with the goat-smell. I can't appreciate this! The avocado is ripe enough to melt in my mouth. A slice of avoc, some parma &a bite of the sourdough = breakfast perfect imo. The sourdough is everythinggg; smoky, lightly crisp on the edges, chewy and a teeny bit sweet.
Oh, i really love their coffee too. The beans have sweet floral notes to them. Prices here are alil steep. Come here and spend your afternoon away to make it more worthwhile.

BROWN SUGAR BOBA!!!
This tastes pretty different from that of Tigersugar's. The fresh milk tasted more milky and doesn't have that sugercane syrup taste (aka without that chendol flavour). Pearls are chewy in texture and the drink was gone before we even realised! Appreciating this alot more and I'll be back to try their fruit teas!
Looks pretty similar to the one at Farrer Park whereby they've a huge pot of zhupcai, curry chicken, braised pork belly and some other ingredients (really like a mixed rice stall).
Their braised pork belly melts in the mouth! But i expected it to be better - rich in that soy sauce goodness, yet has a chewy top layer of skin. I do find their curry to be more runny compared to the original store. Their lalas are pretty plump and fresh, tossed in bean paste.
The food was not bad but aint special too. Price point was fair; braised pork, zhupcai &lalas for $4.20.
The folks over at Thrive are really flexible - they allow mix of flavours for Beyond users! So, I've got a Triple A &Nutty Party! Both featured in the picture are in large size.
The creations took quite some time to be made. Meanwhile, just find a spot on the second floor! Just plop at a corner with the soft cushions. Strike a convo with your friend and just let the afternoon slide away. It's a simple space that's good for catching up on weekend afternoons (oh you know, just so to avoid the crazy heat outside). They sell some healthy snacks by Boxgreen too! It's like a mini mart cum desserts place.
The acai bowls (or rather, cups) are generously layered with lotsa granula, nuts and fruits! Heard that you can even request for less granola. They'll give you more acai in replacement ๐คฉ๐คฉ The acai here isn't too sweet, and i would say the large one can be a meal replacement! Hola over for this large cup at $7 (aft one for one using Burpple Beyond)~
There's a hugeeeee variety of bagels here! Or should i say that the varieties are pretty limitless cos there's DIY option available! From the flavours of the bagels, to the spread and the stuffings, you can customise them allllll. If you can't decide on that perfect combination, just try something off the menu! There's an extensive list of fool proof ones ๐.
Pictured is the Hot Links (chorizo, rockets, sunny side up, cheese and spicy mayo) in onion bagel! The eggs were runny and perfect for soaking by the bread, just like a spongebob. Taste of the chorizo wasn't quite up my alley though. But I've to say that i like the bagel! Bagels are generally on the tough side, but this one made me enjoy chewing it. It's fragrant and if im not wrong, they're lightly grilled on the insides.
The store concept is totally hipster. Order, give them your name and wait for them to call your name for collection. You can call yourself Loki or even Thor ๐ The staff is gamed for it and will even play along! (tried and tested!)
When this plate of Kurobuta Pork (S) was served, it left our jaws dropping! The portion looked so fine (in other words, pathetic)! BUT, IT TASTED SO GOOD! The red meat is tender yet has a bite to it. It has that wok hei/grilled aroma. Pieces of really well cooked meat that sent pleasures to my palate.
The honey chicken drumlets were yummy too but the sweetness was cloying. Do try their Salted Egg Yolk (SEY) Lotus Chips! Every slice is evenly coated with that slightly creamy yet sandy SEY! Perfect for beer pairing.
Wan He Lou's signature is actually their lobster porridge! The lobster is about 700g (as advised by the staff) and is served in a huge pot of broth. The porridge + broth is good for sharing among 4 pax! The soup isn't overwhelming with the sweetness of the crustacean. It certainly didnt blow me away but I found myself getting 3 bowls of it! Addictive! The texture of the broth with rice was pretty one dimensional. Perhaps they could top it off with some rice crisps..
Both meat were ordered in small sizes, except the SEY Lotus Chips that was in medium. We also got a small plate of stir fried long beans. Together with 1 lobster porridge and using Beyond's 1 for 1 (for the meat dishes), the bill came up to about $120. Not the cheapest for zichar but hey, you get atas food like lobster and kurobuta pork! Also, the place is airconditioned (gst &svc charge applies).
Steamed chicken: $18/$30 (half/whole)
Rice: $1 per plate
Hainan Zhup Cai (aka mixed vege): $12
- GST applies but not svc charge ๐
The half chicken may not be that pocket friendly since coffee shops usually have them at $10-12. Given that this place is airconditioned and is like a casual restaurant in a mall, the price point doesn't seem that bad.
Took quite a awhile (say 20min) for the food to be served. All the dishes were served together and the vege were freshly cooked - hot and not cooled down! The chicken was firm yet tender and the soy sauce wasn't too salt laden! There's a thin layer of translucent jelly just beneath the skin ๐คค The rice grains were distinctive, the way i like it for my chicken rice! Rest assure it's not too hard either.
There's ginger paste available here, yayy i love it. My only gripe would be that the chilli can be spicier! Guess i dont have to head down to Bishan/AMK for good chicken rice already, YAY!
