This photo doesnāt do this dish justice at all, but hiding under that unassuming bed of garnishes are tender, melt-in-your-mouth slices of fatty wagyu beef with just the right fat-to-meat ratio. But what I really enjoyed about this dish was that super fragrant and well-balanced dressing, consisting of sesame oil, dashi stock and cider vinegar.
Dehydrated before flash frying, these chicken skins were really yummy! Crispy, well-seasoned with a tinge of Sichuan peppercorn kick and not at all jelat. Warning: ADDICTIVE. Makes for a great bar snack, Iād imagine.
Presentation was lacklustre and portion was disappointing for its price. Otherwise, the duck was better than most places ā crispy yet moist enough and very well seasoned. Waffles were average at best. Overall a decent but forgettable dish, not for its price point.
Didnāt have much expectations, so this turned out to be surprisingly good! Trust TungLok group to produce consistent fried rice. Fragrant short grain rice that was not at all dry. Enjoyed the liberal use of spring onions. Tender cubes of duck. Overall a pleasant dish I wouldnāt mind ordering again.
Oh lord. Iām a sucker for bread, so when I was presented with this plate of grilled fermented potato focaccia (just look at those beautiful char marks!), I knew I was in for a treat. One bite into the carby goodness and it all hit me - fluffy, crunchy and a little bit sweet yet cheesy - the deed was done. Sold. Those slightly muted flavours from the focaccia also paired well with the confit garlic and shallot adobo dip, which was fragrant, garlicky and harboured a slightly spicy kick from paprika.
The much raved about wood-fired grill at this establishment shines in this dish. The smoky aftertaste contrasted with the natural creaminess of avocado was divine. Nice play on texture with the crispy buckwheat puffs and on taste with the zingy ponzu sauce. Interesting use of yuba (Japanese soy bean milk skin), which was really light and perhaps not very memorable in this.
Possibly my favourite dish here. Looks simple, but certainly isnāt in terms of flavour profile. Fresh tuna, octopus and snapper tossed in a tangy dressing comprising of lime, red peppers and onions. Loved how there was the addition of some corn (?) crisps that provided a nice contrast in mouthfeel. Delish.
Simple dish that left a lasting impression. Super hearty and flavourful after stirring in that runny yolk. Tasted like lentil soup, but with a smoky bacon aftertaste. Can be a little salty for some, so I would advise one to dip some bread in it!
Stunning appearance and equally impressive in taste. Loved how the tender and slightly oily trout complemented the tangy basil, confit tomato and olive oil dressing. Big portion - good dish for sharing!
Fried to a nice crisp without being oily. Pry the golden exterior open to reveal tender and moist meat that will leave you yearning for an endless cycle of āokay, just another pieceāās. Love the laidback, slightly mysterious vibe and stellar Japanese-themed bar bites at this joint. Already planning my next visit here. Oh yes, and best of all ā itās a freaking highball den. What more could an ardent whisky fan ask for? š
My favourite dish of the night. If youāre ever thinking of paying this joint a visit, you need to order this hands down. Cut pineapples, diced raw onions and cubed sashimi so fresh and slick in some mystery dressing which Iāll meekly discern as slightly tangy, savoury and addictively fragrant with a hint of sesame (oil, perhaps?). Couldnāt stop reaching for more, and would gladly finish a portion (or two!) on my own. Appetisers are not always meant for sharing...
Ooooh lordy this was so gooood. Tender, melt-in-your-mouth striploin grilled to a nice char on the sides. Paired well with the slightly sweet umami soy reduction and tangy black garlic cream reduction. Interesting use of sunchoke (Jerusalem artichoke) chips, which flavour-wise tastes a little like chrysanthemum and texture-wise like tapioca chips.
