From @101weis2bake, this humming bird cake is incredibly moist and downright satisfying. Nothing is stingy here; each layer of cake comes a chock-full of ingredients like pecans, pineapples and banana, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, making each mouthful an explosion of flavours and textures. Frosted with tangy cream cheese, it's pure bliss.
P.S. A slice of this is very filling, you'll have to share it (but nobody will judge if you have it as a meal).
Located at 720 Ang Mo Kio Ave 6, Good Taste offers wholesome Chinese food with a few varieties of Sichuan dishes. One of them includes the Mala Xiang Guo, which, to me, makes the cut for one of the better ones in my area. Numbness checked, spiciness checked, satisfaction checked.
Simply pick your ingredients from an iPad (veges @ $1-$2 per 100g and meats @ $3 per 100g), inform the staff your desired level of hotness, and await your delicious mala π
From Fresh Beets, this healthy grain bowl is pretty darn delicious. The large bowl comes with a base, 2 cold veges, 2 hot veges, and 1 protein, while the regular portion gives just 1 cold and 1 hot vege.
I loved both my cold deli - beetroot and eggplant (sorry I forgot the exact names) - but the tofu (protein) wasn't quite as impressive.
Perhaps it was due to the cut or the rare doneness, the interior is too chewy for pleasure. The smoky, charred exterior is nice though. Would recommend choosing your own cut of meat from the butcher instead and get the chefs at Campfire to grill it for you.
From Campfire, this dish is very well-executed. Two substantial chunks of tender fish meat topped with a crispy fish skin so satisfying, together with a side of refreshing salad? I'd gladly order this again.
Living in the heartlands, especially mature estates, it gets pretty annoying to have limited access to healthy food options. But I'm glad I've one close to home - just above Bishan bus interchange!
The Wholefood Kitchen works by a simple DIY concept - simply select a base (brown rice, onion bagel, leafy salad and wholemeal wrap) to go with a protein. I loved that my salad was fresh and generous in amount, but the Lemongrass Grilled Tofu ($8) lacked flavour. The wholemeal wrap with Maple Mustard Tempeh ($10) fared better in terms of taste, and was equally wholesome.
Do check the opening hours for the week on their Facebook page as the cook-cum-owner runs on a hectic schedule, and get ready to wait for it least 20 mins because there's only one person doing everything!
C+ is a cosy cafe with an interesting concept - they bring together local creators to establish a community within their space. Homebakers, such as @101weis2bake and @petitejoybakes, are supplying some of their best-selling cakes to the cafe, and Singapore-based floral studio @inashea takes up a space in their cafe too!
The Heartbeet Cake ($7.80) is a gluten-free creation by Masterchef Singapore finalist @gen_lxn. The flourless chocolate cake is soft and contains a chock-full of shredded beetroot. Covered with a layer of avocado cocoa frosting, the acquired taste and texture takes a while to get used to, but I can foresee the health-conscious individuals enjoying this! Tried her gluten-free Carrot Cake ($7.80) and it's pretty good too!
With a menu that changes weekly, it may be difficult to catch some of your desired cakes from the bakers. Some of the best-sellers include pies ($7) from @elijahpies, Ondeh Ondeh Cake ($7.50) from @beelibakes, and their made-in-house Buttermilk Waffles ($10 w/ single scoop ice cream).
Housed in the same coffeeshop as Thai Fusion Wanton Mee, this stall sells rojak, popiah and popiah triangle (think a popiah foldover sans turnips - good news to all the crunch lovers!).
Good:
β’ Skin is chewy
β’ Turnips are cooked and seasoned really well
β’ Instead of sweet sauce, prawn paste is used for an elevated umaminess
Drawbacks:
β’ At $1.90 for a small roll, it's pretty expensive
Verdict: 4/5
I've thoroughly enjoyed the juicy chicken thigh that's redolent of strong lemongrass. Pour over the green chilli marmalade - it gives a good spicy kick. Unfortunately, the braised egg was tasteless and the bowl of rice I've gotten was really, really hard and dry.
I've tried my friend's Miso Lu Rou Fan ($4.50) and I found it yummy! The rice grains were so much better (than mine), and the dish wasn't overly oily. More savoury than sweet when compared to the Taiwan-style lu rou fan, alongside a variety of vegetables, I can see this becoming a favourite for many.
A clever adaptation of the Japanese tamago, this fluffy egg roll is deliciously stuffed with savoury tuna and seaweed. Requested for the mayo and ketchup on the side, but I guess it was very much needed to round up the entire dish - it provides moisture and an additional tang to the egg roll. The egg itself may not be as smooth as a typical tamago, but the components come together making the overall mouthful equally satisfying.
Also, I got this free with a stew thanks to Burpple Beyond's 1-for-1 deal π
