Had to buy into the hype since it was the most popular search item when you key in "what to eat at hua lien". Definitely many levels up from whatever I can find back home and for a serious fraction of the price. Although, I have to burst some bubbles and say that I wasn't exactly wowed by it either. The bread was great, golden and perfectly crisp. But, perhaps it was the filling that we chose (granted it's supposed to be crowd favourite flavour), there was something different about the gong bao flavour that didn't quite gel.
All in all, it's yummy for the first few bites then after some psychoanalysis, regrettably meh....I'll take avocado on toast any day

PS: As benign and luxuriously white chocolately as they look, they actually contain a pretty potent "serum" of foie gras that really knocked everyone off the table. I guess what I should really have captured was everybody's reaction, especially mom's.
I must have a pretty immature palette but I don't get this combination EVEN if both foie gras and white chocolate are supposedly just different forms of fat. Nonetheless, a stunning feat for the eyes

Nonetheless i couldn't pass up both sashimi and unagi in a single bowl. Unfortunately I was quite underwhelmed that the unagi was readymade, refridgerated and set aside - not epic enough. PS: the beef they serve here is no where nearly as good as the one your mum makes jie ying. The beef is disappointingly tough :(
Pad Thai @ random shop house opposite gold hill plaza.
So one day we decided to explore outside of ttsh and randomly chanced upon this Thai place that had a pretty doubtful mishmash of cuisines in their menu. Turns out, they sell pretty awesome Thai food :) This pad thai is awesome! It's wonderfully sweet and spicy. The noodles are moist yet at the same time dry enough to stay distinct, springy and fresh. Contrasted with the crunchy peanut bits and fresh brean sprouts, this makes for the perfect lunch time chow.
PS: the Thai milk tea was pretty rad as well :) Too bad though I think this place has closed down :(

Really love that the crab is so fresh. The meat is juicy and tender. The sweet flesh marries perfectly with the sharp white pepper sauce. ♡☆♡☆
Sam gye gang (ginseng chicken soup) @ NUS - science canteen
Amazing stuff for science canteen. Wasn't expecting it to taste good at all tbh. Total snob, i know and I'm ashamed. This needs probably a dash more salt but other than that no complains, none whatsoever! Chicken was a little dry but still quite satisfyingly tender. Even the kimchi was not bad. Beats the one korean place medical center hands down.
Gotta have me somemore next time!
