Pork Ribs Prawn Noodles (#02-31) @ Tiong Bahru Market and food center
I must say that I had expected quite a lot out of this dish. Wouldn't say I was sorely disappointed but I wasn't particularly wowed either. Despite that it is still a rather pleasant dish to have on a nice Sunday morning.
Highlights of the dish:
The PRAWN MEE SOUP. The commonly neglected bowl of soup that accompanies this dry mee is phenomenal. Granted I usually avoid prawn mee because it sometimes or most of the time, the soups too "腥", too "hei mee-ish". Rather off putting imo. Just like failed prawn bisque soups. So I haven't had that many prawn mee soups. Nonetheless, this soup is truly delectable and quite addictive. Kinda almost finished my mini bowl of it. It has the perfect balance between sweet and savory. The prawn essence permeates the soup beautifully. The prawn flavour is front and center yet enhanced by the genius combination of herbs/spices that the towkay brews in the dark mysterious delicious Broth.
The Pork ribs are quite good as well. Which is ironic since this is prawn mee but whatever. Not the most tender but quite flavourful, esp when it'd mixed with the dry prawn mee sauce.
Wrt to the prawns and the meefen. I felt that they fell quite short for me. The prawns were quite over cooked although they come PEELED (at least at the body. The tail and head are still intact). The meefen was on the dry side and quite stuck to each other as well. So it really dampened the whole eating experience quite a bit.
Nonetheless, I'm quite excited to try the soup version of this! Gimme some of that soup!!!
Hokkaido scallop truffle cream fettuccine @ Garibaldi - 36 purvis street.
THANK U @thefamousgoose for the awesome recommendation and for the awesomer fact that we ended up going on the same day after eopt:) This is lovely and so divine. The cream base is luscious and wonderfully perfumed with truffle. The waft of truffle goodness that drifts to you really whets your appetite. On top of that, the dish is loaded with chucks of perfectly pan seared scallop halves. Slightly caramelised on the surface, melt in your mouth sweet scallops that are best of all COATED with truffle cream and embellished with speckles of cracked black pepper that provide contrast to the heavy cream. Can you ask for more ?! I think they made really great flavour choices with this dish. As scallops are naturally milder in taste, it they cannot be paired with strong sauces because they'll drown in it and taste like strange fish cake. Truffle cream is perfect because the truffles provide the aroma while the cream (being equally as mild tasting as scallops, it takes on any flavour it is mixed with) absorbs all the essence of truffle. This really lets you appreciate the natural taste of scallop but at the same time enhances the taste of this dish overall. MMmm super decadent and so unforgettably good!
Creme Brulee with black sesame gelato @ Dolce Tokyo - bugis mall
Peculiar combination but nothing unbearable. The Creme Brulee itself is really good! The torched surgery surface is perfection, like beautiful tinted glass atop the lovely custard layer. The vanilla flavoured custard is luscious and creamy yet neither eggy nor "pudding-y". Could have had it on its own really. The crunchy caramelised top with the soft almost molten interior is a classic genius of a combination
Imo the blueberries, marshmallows and sesame ice cream were more distracting than complimentary. I chose black sesame for its strong toasty flavour as I thought it would counter the creamy taste if the custard so the dish would be too gelad. Turned out that worked too well. Eat eat component alone and they are fab but together, thru kinda neutralised each other out. Losing both the mellow custardy taste and the strong toasty sesame taste. On a side note the black sesame ice cream was rad. Its really true to its flavour! The only complaint is that it's a little too "icy" for a gelato. Would be nice if it was a tad creamier. Appreciated the toasted marshmallows but they could have been given more of a roast so that they are gooey on the inside and not just superficially burnt out the outside 😐
Perhaps vanilla flavoured gelato would still be the best cliché flavour to compliment this dish.
Earl Grey lavender soft serve @ Sunday folk - Holland v.
This cafe, is one well known place considering it's "ulu-ness". Crazily packed with people plus a long long line at that. I'm super sua gu but the electronic queueing system and subsequent operator call that you get informing you avoid the availability of seats is kinda, beyond awesome
Anyways I digress. So this place is well know for it's waffles with soft serve, but unfortunately, the waffle wait time is perpetually 50mins - 1hour. Which is absolutely ridiculous. So we didn't have any and settled with the ice cream.
While it's pretty pricey, this soft serve ice cream really does not disappoint. @bbarneyy, jun and I took a mouthful and were like OMG EARL GREY. SO NICE! The flavour is perfectly concentrated yet sophisticated and well complimented by the fragrant hints (OK maybe more than hints) of lavender. Their ice creams are generously embellished with an assortment of toppings depending on the flavours, so don't need no opt for extra toppings. The almond crunch that comes with this favour is phenomenal. It's sweet, nutty gooey and crunchy all at the same time. ♡☆♡☆ If you thought daily scoops Earl Grey was good, this one tastes even more like Earl Grey. The cone on the other hand was nothing to shout about, fragrant but not crispy enough. In fact I was quite "lao Hong". But whatever, the ice cream makes up for itt
Fair warning though, the flavour really fluctuates from a day to day basis. Consolation, the ice cream is freshly made everyday!
