Do you know that bagels are actually boiled before they are baked? This process gives the bagel its signature dense interior and chewy crust. Interesting! Maybe I should try making bagels one of these days.

How about having a slurpilicious bowl of silky and chewy chilled udon from Udon Kamon? The restaurant, which specialises in Sanuki udon has combined three types of udon into one bowl: Udon Kamon’s original white udon; the green matcha udon (made with uji matcha from Kyoto) and the red chilli udon (made with Korean chilli powder). Such a delectable feast for the eyes and tummy! My favourite is the red chilli udon which is tasty with a touch of spiciness.
There are three interesting udon offerings to savour:
1) Mentai Maze Udon (S$12.80++): Creamy and rich in taste, this udon offering is definitely a crowd-pleaser as it features mentaiko which is a well-liked ingredient of many Singaporeans.
2) Beef Shabu Shabu Bukkake Udon (S$13.80++): Served with tender and evenly marbled beef imported from Australia, this udon dish is drenched with chilled dashi sauce and packed with a rich umami flavour.
3) Uni Maze Udon (S$19.80++): The creamy and savoury sea urchin from Hokkaido gives a luscious feel to the udon. Being an uni lover, this dish gets my vote!
PROMOTION: From now to 30 June, enjoy 50% off every second bowl (lower price bowl), one of which has to be a choice from the Summer menu.

Diners can look forward to a handful of novel dishes that are unique to Yi Shi Kitchen, as well as familiar zi char delights.
1) Crispy Crackly Egg (S$8/S$12/S$16): Doused in sweet sauce and topped with crispy golden mushroom, this eye-catching dish is reminiscent of a well-known asian dish, Tauhu Telur. Crispy and fragrant, this is an indulgence for lovers of deep-fried food but probably not so for the health-conscious.
2) Homemade Tofu with Preserved Turnip (S$10/S$15/S$20): Deep-fried homemade soy tofu topped with crispy preserved turnip. The texture and taste of the salty-sweet turnip pieces complement well with the silky tofu. Best eaten with rice as the strong flavours can be overwhelming if eaten on its own.
3) Green Dragon Vegetables with Silver Sprouts (S$10/S$15/S$20): Crunchy and tasty, this is a great dish to up your daily intake of greens.
4) Claypot Hua Diao Chicken (S$12/S$18/S$24): Wok-fried chicken leg with Chinese rice wine and basil in a spicy, sweet and sticky sauce. Very flavourful but I wish that the fragrance of the Chinese rice wine is stronger so as to give it a more distinctive taste.

1) Rice Dumpling with Flavoured Pork 五香肉粽 (S$6.50): This savoury dumpling is thoughtfully prepared with top grade glutinous rice lightly flavoured with premium soya sauce and marinated by hand to avoid damaging the rice grains. The succulent pork belly filling is seasoned with 15 types of spices and condiments which makes it so tasty and fragrant. I really relish each bite of the dumpling which boasts a flavourful, chewy and soft texture.
2) Red Bean Rice Dumpling 豆沙粽 (S$5.50): Specially air-flown from Taiwan, this pillow-shaped handmade dumpling is generously filled with finely-mashed red bean. I love how the sweetness of the filling blends seamlessly with the soft and chewy glutinous rice.
3) Aged Puer Tea Gift Box 陈年普洱礼盒 (S$12.80 ~ 8 pyramid tea bags): Featuring premium whole tea leaves that are aged for five to eight years, this premium brew has a silky smooth finish with a soft, lingering fragrance of dates. An ideal brew to go with Din Tai Fung's dumplings or as a gift for your friends or loved ones.

What’s Pide (pronounced as “pea-dae”) is the creator of South Korea’s first pocket pide with a total of 11 outlets in Seoul. Each pide is unique as it is hand-kneaded and freshly baked daily. The technique and proprietary recipe give the otherwise firm traditional middle-eastern flatbread a spongier texture.
Each pide comes with romaine lettuce, shredded cabbage, tomato slices and a filling of one's choice. I really love how soft and springy the pide tastes and it makes a filling meal, especially when topped with fries (regular/spicy) and a drink for S$4. To add a personal touch, each wrapped pide comes with a handwritten cheery message. Yes, not printed but handwritten! This is a heartwarming gesture that will certainly put a smile on one's face.
Some of the pide-licious noms I have tried include:
1) Mrs. Park (S$9): The bulgogi beef slices are tender and well-seasoned. Pickled jalapenos and caramelised onions add a tangy-sweet taste dimension which I really enjoy.
2) Prawn Star (S$8.50): Full soft shell prawns (including the heads) are deep fried with a light batter to retain moisture as well as its natural umami. A drizzle of house-made kimchi mayo adds the perfect finishing touch.
3) Vanda Tea (S$3.50): The drinks menu here is just as exciting as the pide menu. Choose from an interesting range of coffee, nitro cold brews, special fizzies and ice cold beer to go with your pide orders.
Besides the pide creations featured here, there are three more available options, namely Hey! Lu Lu, Eda-san and Sofia's Meatballs. I cannot wait to go back and try these edible pockets full of joy!

The haus pasta dishes here are not really the traditional pasta offerings but an innovative mix and match of interesting ingredients to create unique pasta fare which will challenge and excite your taste buds.
1) Prawn Olio Olio (S$18): Spicy and savoury, this dish comprises curly pasta made with butterfly pea flower and flavoured with a fiery dressing made with garlic and Sichuan peppercorn. Garlic prawns, tobiko and lap cheong crumble (a mix of 3 waxed meats) are added to provide a dash of contrasting colours and savoury goodness. My favourite!
2) 300 Day Grain-Fed Fatty Wagyu (S$15): Besides pasta, Pasta Supremo also serves droolicious sides like this tart yet savoury Grade A3-4 Wagyu dish. A perfect side to go with your mains.
3) Vege Wege (S$16): A vegetarian option consisting of curly pasta (made with butterfly pea flower), burnt miso corn, mushroom mix, toasted nori breadcrumbs and grated 24-month aged Parmagiano Reggiano. The pasta is tossed in an Asian pesto sauce made with a medley of spices like Thai basil, garlic, ginger and lemongrass. So tasty that it will appeal to the carnivores too!
4) Carbonara, But Not Really (S$16): Another curly butterfly pea flower pasta dish drenched in a creamy sauce made with an assortment of shiitake, shimeiji, and button mushrooms. Served with thickly-sliced haus bacon, a wobbly sous vide egg and grated 24-month aged Parmagiano Reggiano. There is no egg in the sauce, which explains the inspiration behind the name of this hearty dish.
Besides choosing from the haus pasta menu, there is also the option to "Build Your Own Pasta" and customise your dish.
