A friend calls their cheng tng life-changing. I won't go that far, but it's a tier above others, because the many ingredients make the taste really complex.
I had thought that the cold one was delicious already, but the warm one was even better! Granted, we had this on a not-so-hot day, but there’s just something about the warmness making the rock sugar water and ingredients complement each other better.
My parents have brought me here several times before, back when we used to frequent the east on saturdays. The ‘soup’ is pleasantly and mildly sweet, and rather refreshing. There were lots of ingredients: sweet potato, tapioca(?) balls, dried persimmon, dried longan, lychee, candied wintermelon (my fav ingredient!), white fungus, gingko nut, barley, yellow bean. We had this on a blazing hot day, which was perfect :)
This is quite simply the best cheng tng i’ve tried so far in Singapore and possibly the most expensive at $3. No complaints about the price for me though; as each bowl of delicious cheng tng is so refreshing and filled with generous amount of ingredients.
It is pretty uncommon to find this dish in hawker centres these days and this is one of the stalls still serving it. Located alongside the famous 夜来香 cheng tng (both are under the same family business), this is basically like another style of 'rojak' but with cuttlefish mixed with kang kong (water spinach), cucumber, tau pok, lettuce & pineapple doused with sweet sauce & chili sauce.
Cheng Tng is one dessert that can be enjoyed no matter when as the weather swings from warm to cold to six inches from the sun. Hot or cold, this bowl here is delish either way ; and look at how cheng it is! It tastes as good as it looks with good fragrance and sweetness from the pandan leaves and dried longan. Plus, they are very generous with quality ingredients like sweet potato, ginko nuts, white fungus, barley, dried persimmon, candied winter melon etc. It's $3/bowl but I wouldn't mind paying for this refreshing treat!
