Apparently quite new in this neighbourhood which is about to be demolished soon (pretty sure I hadn't seen it before the last few years), Hock Guan Kee at the abovementioned food centre serves a variety of pan-fried chicken dishes and chicken cutlets with rice. All items come with a choice of two sides (salad, baked beans, fries and egg are available) at $3.80. If you are one wanting to eat till you get filled, opt for the combination of fries and egg just like how I did. The sunny side-up was runny and crisp without reeking of overused oil. Pan-fried chicken was juicy with crisp skin, seasoned only with pepper and salt to flavour and although rather oily, it does bring back a little old-school nostalgia of hawker western food in the good ol' days. Fries could be done with a little seasoning of salt, but was delightfully crisp; nothing much to complain despite being out of the bag for how much you pay. Pretty value-for-money indeed.
Soup base always as good as before, seafood are fresh, but soup given was too less.
$10 for the 虾婆 seafood soup. Lotsa minced meat in the soup. Don't expect to find big pieces虾婆 here. Soup was sweet and favourful. Was expecting a richer crustacean taste though.
Quite impressed by the Wanton Noodles from this stall at Woodlands; chili was surprisingly good with a moderate kick and the sauce was rather flavourful so it really gives the springy noodles a dimension of flavours. Charsiew was also the meaty-flavoured sort that does not get covered in too much sweetness (which I love), though I am not a fan of the Wantons which had pretty awkwardly bland tasting skin that doesn't seem to match with the savoury meat filling.
From this stall named Sheng Chicken Rice. Served with rice that's served along with chicken rice, though slightly on the blander end. Char Siew despite dyed wasn't too strong on the sweetness; focused much on the meaty flavours instead while the roast pork was smoky. Visited them when they were getting ready to close so they did not have much to give, and dishes were generally lukewarm; could have been better if visited earlier.
