The Better Scoop (Punggol Coast)

The folks behind The Better Scoop have recently opened yet another new outlet — these folks seemed to have been lining themselves up along areas in the north-east considering how they have locations in Anchorvale Village and Serangoon; their newest outlet is situated within Punggol Coast Mall which is also conveniently located around the new Punggol Coast MRT Station along the North-East Line. One can find The Better Scoop outlet there being relatively nearby a cafe named White Cloud Cafe; The Better Scoop is located around the bend that leads to an overhead bridge leading out of Punggol Coast Mall. The Better Scoop outlet at Punggol Coast Mall is sized rather similarly to its Anchorvale Village location though albeit less claustrophobic whilst at it; the decor theme of the location also more or less follows the same that they have adopted since the opening of its Serangoon outlet where it features wooden fittings matched with white walls that also comes with tiles that replicates the look of terracotta bricks for a warm and inviting look whilst keeping it clean and without being too minimalistic. The Better Scoop’s offerings at Punggol Coast Mall follows the same as what is being served up at its other locations; features quite the same range of ice-cream that they have been offering all these while, whilst one can also opt for the ice-cream to come in a cup or a cone, or add-on the Mochi Skin or to pair with a Classic / Nian Gao Waffle. Beverages available at The Better Scoop at Punggol Coast also follows the same as what is being offered at their other locations — the menu having been split into Coffee, Milk-Based, Hot Tea (In a cup), and Refreshing Iced Tea & Soda.

Went with our usual order of the Nian Gao Waffle and decided to pair the waffle up with two scoops of ice-cream; one being the Umeshu (Plum Wine) Ice-Cream and the other being the Pi Pa Gao (Loquat) Ice-Cream. Whilst the availability of Nian Gao-infused waffles have become more commonplace in recent years with multiple ice-cream parlours now offering the item, it is worth noting that The Better Scoop is actually the very first establishment in Singapore to serve up such rendition of waffles when they had first opened their Serangoon location years ago. The Nian Gao Waffle at The Better Scoop’s location in Punggol Coast is still as consistent as what is being served up at their other outlets which also includes their Ri Ri Cha 日日茶 concept at Maxwell / Chinatown — the waffles coming with a waft of buttermilk fragrance whilst slicing through the waffles reveals the chewy and stretchy Nian Gao that also hinted of a bit of sweetness for a contrast in terms of both flavours and texture for the waffle. The waffle also does drizzled with maple syrup and chocolate sauce around the sides of the plate; a classic combination that does not seem to go wrong.

The Umeshu (Plum Wine) Ice-Cream does come with a milk base that is pretty evidently smooth and creamy; there are hints of the slight tang of plum much like in the case of Ume-based beverages, though the booziness does seem to be muted — not sure if this is a move that is deliberately done to make the flavour be potentially suitable for families with kids. The Pi Pa Gao (Loquat) Mint Ice-Cream has always been one of our favourite flavours that The Better Scoop has to offer alongside the Tie Guan Yin (Iron Buddha) Tea flavour — the Pi Pa Gao (Loquat) Mint Ice-Cream carrying a herbal and cooling sensation from both the loquat and mint that was especially refreshing without being too milky; the ice-cream carrying that smooth and creamy consistency that The Better Scoop’s ice-cream is always known to carry. It is always a happy occasion to see the folks at The Better Scoop opening a new location; these folks have certainly seen themselves coming a long way since their early days being Just Because Creamery starting as a simple hole-in-the-wall space within Victory8 at Jalan Legundi in Sembawang. They have also kept the quality of their offerings pretty consistent whilst operating all of their locations in Singapore. As always, we would like to congratulate the folks at The Better Scoop for the opening of their newest outlet at Punggol Coast Mall, and wishing them all the best in what is to come; not sure if we would be seeing more locations from them in due time, though we are definitely looking forward to see where they will be coming up next if this is to be so!
