The first time we had came across Scoop & Sketch, we had originally thought that we were looking at a cafe that is not located in Singapore — the dual-storey set-up with its bright lighting and vibrant interior colour scheme definitely giving this spot another vibe from what we are used to seeing from local cafes to say the least. Took us some time to suss out that Scoop & Sketch is actually a cafe that is located at Atrix; the building of which it is located in is also not a difficult find considering how it is located conveniently just across from Aljunied MRT Station along Aljunied Road — the shopfront of Scoop & Sketch even directly facing the road. For those whom are wondering about its namesake; yes, Scoop & Sketch is a concept that consists of two very distinct elements — the “Scoop” refers to the F&B side of the business, while we would leave you to wonder what Sketch is since we are all about the food here. There is a bit of an American diner-style theme that is going on with the space; loud, contrasting hues of red, blue and yellow adorn the space along with how it is being lit with neon lighting — everything here just seems loud, yet at the same time, fun. This goes even all the way down to their outdoor furniture; the tables bearing smiley emojis. Dine-in seats are spread across both levels within the shop unit; it is noted that tables meant for groups of four (4) pax can be found on the lower levels — the upper levels is where one can find seats that can accommodate for those that patronise Scoop & Sketch in pairs. The upper level also houses the “Sketch” element in the establisment’s name. The F&B side of things heavily focuses on gelato — one can choose to have their gelato in cups, cones or with a waffle; beverages available at Scoop & Sketch includes coffee, as well as packaged / canned beverages that are mostly sourced from Korea.

Since we were visiting Scoop & Sketch on an empty stomach in the evening, it is needless to say that we found ourselves going for a Waffle to pair with our choice of gelato. One can say that the range of flavours of the gelato stocked in the display fridge is rather decent; there are flavours such as Chrysanthemum Cacao Nibs, Blue Pea Vanilla and Black Sesame, though these are flavours that one would probably call common if they have been to enough gelato / ice-cream parlours across the island. Feeling rather adventurous (though we have also tried such flavours of gelato before), our choice of flavour of gelato to pair with the waffle would be the White Truffle. The waffle at Scoop & Sketch is made-to-order, hence some time would be required for the waffle to be prepared and served to the table. As it reached our table, we noticed how there is some effort placed in making their waffle look aesthetically appealing; the sprinkling of icing sugar is rather obvious and one tactic that is often used by other establishments as well — they have also included a drizzle with the waffle that only surrounds the waffle without being done over the waffle itself.

Digging into the waffle, the variant of the waffle served at Scoop & Sketch is rather basic — one that is crisp on the exterior and consistently airy within; not too heavy to have with the gelato, though might not do well with those who love plush and slightly denser ones in general. Turns out, the drizzle here seems to be condensed milk — an interesting choice considering how most gelato / ice-cream parlours would have went for the all-time favourite chocolate and maple syrup / honey drizzles instead. The use of condensed milk goes surprisingly well with the waffle; this is especially considering the texture of the waffle itself, not to mention that there seems to be something done to the condensed milk to ensure that the overall combination does not get too sweet. The White Truffle gelato is no stranger to us; after all, we have had White Truffle gelato previously at establishments such as Sugartown and Fiordilatte. Here, the White Truffle gelato comes with an evidently milky base that is creamy and smooth; that combined with the equally punchy note of earthy and fragrant White Truffle which perfumes throughout the entire scoop, this is definitely one that is made for the truffle lover in mind — a medley of sweet and savoury that only truffle lovers will appreciate. Prices of one single scoop of gelato at Scoop & Sketch is at $5 for a basic flavour; premium flavours would see an additional charge of $1 above that price — the Waffle is priced at $7. Patrons whom wish to go for a drink with their waffles and gelato can opt for a “Happy Meal” — the combination of a waffle with one scoop of gelato and a drink starts from $14. Considering how the prices are rather decent and how Scoop & Sketch does provide a rather unique and fun environment to dine at, this is one spot that we would not be too surprised to see being in the feeds of social media influencers in time to come.
