11.50 for Chicken rice? The audacity! But if that restaurant has been in existence since 1978, something has to be going right for the chicken rice. After a stomach growling wait, we found out what those things were. Tender, plump chicken, perfectly balanced rice with just the right amount of spices and oiliness and some of the most flavourful soup that I've ever tasted with chicken rice. Considering some chicken rice can come up to 8 bucks a set in foodcourts these days, I'd say this chicken rice is well worth it! Time for us to gear up and try some of their other tze char fare!
I gotta admit, Nasi Ambeng was an alien concept to me but through the lure of gorgeous instagram photos, I was brought to this place. When the food arrived, it was a sight to behold, think of a typical Nasi Padang dish but upsized many times over with portions to boot and all on one plate. Imagine if you went to eat cze char but everything arrived on one plate, with the gravies mixed together. Just make sure that you are going with a group of die hard sambal lovers cos some of the dishes are not meant for the faint of heart!

Simple food done well. There are some food which needs no well spun stories of its origins coupled with interesting decor. Punggol nasi lemak is it. Fresh fried chicken, fragrant chili, crunchy Ikan bilis with a sunny side up egg but with just the extra oomph that makes the trip worth while. Of course, punggol nasi lemak boasts a smorgasbord of side dishes, of which the specialty nogh hiang really stands out, crispy bean curd skin wrapped around chunky water chestnut and juicy meat. Best of all, this outlet had no queues even during dinner time and was comfortably air conditioned.
These reminded me so much of the sweet potato balls from Taiwan! Crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. Give me more!
Is this a good bowl of noodles? Yes on all counts! The lor bah absolutely melts in your mouth. The noodles perfectly bouncy and the sauce can't be faulted with lots of crunchy meaty toppings. Even the soup; that perfunctory bowl of wonton water turns out to be the perfect bowl of radish soup to go with the lor bah. But for all its high points, you just can't shake off the feeling that this is a bowl of dressed up Chinese noodles given a hipster spin.
Very average bowl of chirashi
