Cafes

A review of cafes that I went to in Singapore in an effort to restore the hope that I had lost and the disappointment in the cafe culture in Singapore. Follow if you’re also disappointed by cafes in Singapore! But why do I keep going to cafes then? Because I want a nice place to relax and read in during the weekend.

The journey in the title refers to me on my journey to find a cafe in Singapore to restore my hope in our local cafe scene. There were some hits and misses and some neutral ground like the regular potato fries and cheese sticks. The flagwhite beef burger did not have a strong beefy flavour and was dry with just the flavour and aroma of the bacon. Misses for me was the halibut burger which I am willing to bet that the halibut was frozen and the sauce on the burger was too spicy to enjoy. Also the iced chai latte that I had was too watered down by the milk. It felt I was drinking milk and imagining the chai. But the hit for me though was the sweet potato fries! Way better than regular sweet potato fries out there and I might wager that they made it themselves from scratch. Also the coffee was good! If I return in the future, I would give the burgers a miss and try their “knife and fork” menu items. Overall, 6.5/10 for me. Might return if I’m in the area.

In the sense that you don’t know whether it’s good or bad or if you like it or not. The ambience of the place is good but def not one of those cafes that you sit in to read for hours but you spend 2 hours there catching up with a friend over brunch. Generous portions at this place and I like that they don’t skimp on quality of the ingredients! I also like that the food was cooked well and properly but my only gripe with the food was that I don’t understand why they put certain sauces or flavours with certain foods… it’s unnecessary. But great drinks as well! 6.99/10!

I got excited when I saw some of the menu items like crab meat eggs Benedict and ngoh hiang pork burger. The croissant we ordered tasted like it was bought from a factory and toasted in stores (prob was), the ngoh Hiang burger was alright, moist and juicy patty but the five-spice flavour was faint. The wagyu beef burger (pictured above)… why get succulent, fatty and prized wagyu beef just to grind it up into a patty for a burger? A wagyu steak sandwich would’ve made more sense. What happened with the wagyu burger happened with the crab meat eggs Benedict. It would’ve been better if they had just put lumps of dressed crab meat instead of making a crab meat patty where the shredded crab was almost indistinguishable from canned tuna, texture-wise. But hey, at least their drinks are really nice! Bought a summer iced tea, it was fragrant and refreshing and an iced coffee that was aromatic. 5.9/10 stars for me.

Always looking for a quaint place that serves good food to read in. Love simply but done well food.
