An array of tasty sides - tater tots topped with grilled cheese ($8.50), honey seafood tempura ($10) and sea salt fries ($4.50). Spot the serving of dakangjeong at the back!
Regret only buying one because this donut ($1) was incredible?! Skip the curry puff and stock up these instead - these are light and fluffy with a great chew, lightly dusted with powder sugar. Easily the best traditional donut I’ve had. Make sure to get them when they’re fresh!
The Honolulu coffee ($1.90++) tastes like regular kopi C kosong but it was too milky for me. The highlight of our visit was definitely the egg tarts ($2.15++)! I generally prefer tart bases, but this pastry base was light and flaky. The filling was flavourful and not too sweet!
Made with beans from Liberty Coffee, the flat white ($5.20) had a dark roast and slightly malty flavour! Paired nicely with the sharp tang of the passionfruit meringue tart ($6.80) - I prefer my tart bases more crumbly and buttery, but their passionfruit filling is hands down the best I’ve had and keeps me coming back for more!
Tried this after multiple glowing recommendations! The polo bun with chicken thigh ($3.20 a la carte) is a relish mix of sweet and savoury. Would have liked the bun to be fluffier and its top crispier, but it paired well with the lightly seasoned and juicy chicken slab. It might not be sufficiently filling for some, but I was satisfied with this for lunch. Add on a drink and you’re good to go!
Puff and Peaks blew up online over CB - I’m really glad I finally got to try their donuts ($3.80 each)! Opted to have them chilled for maximal enjoyment of the cream, but the pastry wasn’t as fluffy as I expected. The original vanilla bean flavour was a tad too sweet for me, it’d probably go great with black coffee. Enjoyed their seasonal options cherry lime and coconut pineapple - one was bursting with tart berry flavours and the other a mellowed sweetness! Look forward to trying more :-)
Been dining at Bread Yard for years, but only just got round to trying their famed cruffins! Opted for the passionfruit flavour ($4.50) - I loved how crisp and buttery the pastry was, with its heaviness offset by a tart curd.
Such a pity that they no longer allow dine in or reheating of pastries! The almond croissant ($5) was still crisp, but I would have preferred it warm. Loved the added crunch from double baking and the almond slices on top, but found the inner layers a tad dense. The frangipani filling was not too sweet but a little plain!
I’d recommend asking them to heat the pastry for longer! Ours was barely warm and sorely deficient in crispiness, despite our request. That being said, the sticky bun ($4) features a wonderful medley of flavours - I particularly loved the pecan glazed in a sticky caramel.
Lola’s famed honey paprika wings ($10+)! These are pretty darn tasty; the batter is crispy, drizzled with thick honey and sprinkled with spices. A real explosion of flavour with every bite! However, the portions are small - not quite worth the premium.
Would recommend making a reservation way in advance, or buffering for time to queue. We waited about 40 min on a Friday night! A 1h dining window is enforced as long as there are people waiting for seats. Also, they will not be stocking tarts for an indefinite period of time.
So happy to discover a Tai Cheong! These are hands-down my favourite egg tarts ($2) - I usually dabao them back to toast till the buttery tart is crisp, and the custard caramelised on top. The pandan tart ($2) is really fragrant too!
Had to wait ~ 20 min to get a seat on a weekend afternoon! Thought we’d try something different by getting one of their savoury pastries. The ham & cheese croissant ($6.50) looks rather underwhelming, but it maintained a crisp exterior. The inside seems denser than their plain croissants, which is a pity as the buttery layers were not appreciable. The melted cheese ties the ham in nicely!
