Red hill chwee kueh ( Hong Shan chwee kueh )
Redhill market
This stall has a huge signboard that says “ redhill chwee kueh “ in Chinese.
Think smooth rice cakes with the QQ texture with a nice faint rice fragrance covered with roughly chopped crunchy preserved vegetables that lends such a nice juxtaposition of textures against the soft rice cakes.
This is chwee kueh at its most traditional. I like that the persevered radish ( chye Po) was savoury rather than sweet and this complemented the home made chilli ( which had a tinge of sweet ) quite well .
Mr Chan , the friendly stall owner has been selling chwee kueh since his teenage days ( at prince Edward market ).
These days he operates only on Saturdays and Sundays so be sure to catch him only on the weekends ( 8 am to 7pm or till sold out ).
Excellently executed Char Kwey Teow from a stall named Zhong ji at redhill Hawker / market.
The Kwey Teow texture was superior - silky smooth with a good stretch.
The flavour was well balanced with a good mix of sweet ( from the black sauce ) and savoury undertones ( from the fragrant garlic and soy sauce) and good wok hei.
Ask for less oil so that you can save your calories to stomach the vast variety of food at the market.
This stall also does pretty good carrot cake ( especially the white ones), Hokkien prawn mee and fried rice.
