As we slide down the spiral staircase, it opened up to this ancient basement cavern reminiscent of the first Christian Churches. The laid back atmosphere calmed us and subtly tempered our tempers as we slowly sipped our cocktails away. With luminaries such as Clark Gable and the rat pack dining here when in Rome, we got a prominent Lebanese political family within our section; for the restaurant, it was another day in the office. ☺️. Service was excellent and they tried hard to accommodate us despite not having a reservation (we were recommended by the other place we didn't have a reservation for either). I had the spaghetti and clams and it was quite simply wonderful with the pasta in just the right al dente-ness and the clams fresh. I dislike eating asparagus but for this, I had to fight for the last stick! 😁 lightly seasoned and battered, the asparagus had a crisp crunch on the outside and slightly moist on the inside. When I ordered it, I was thinking of the region where it came from and the combination of Sangiovese and Cab Sav; + the price point of course. Then our waiter took it out of the cellar and started dusting off the bottle discretely. He then presented the tasting glass and I was blown; it was full bodied and an absolute stunner of a red. After happily agreeing to it, I looked at the year and started to sweat, thinking that I had see the price wrongly. 😓 At the end of the night, I didn't; and I could not believe how "horribly wrong" the pricing was for this. 😁 I can only say, that perhaps Italians might not like such full bodied reds!
