Really affordable zichar from this little joint, located next to Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council. Definitely a hidden gem for the heartlanders living around the area :)
-
The carbs - Moonlight Horfun ($4, Small) and Yang Zhou Fried Rice ($6, Medium) - are really affordable and also rather tasty! Hor fun could have been a little wetter, while the Fried rice was flawless. -
"Nai bai" veggie ($9, Medium) had reasonable amounts of wok hei; not as strong as I would have liked it, but it's still not bad!
-
Teriyaki Pork Ribs ($10, Small) was astonishing plentiful for a 'small' portion. The sticky teriyaki sauce was more salty than sweet, with added umami from a generous serving of fried garlic bits. Pork was tender and went well with the sauce! -
Last but not least, the dish that I spotted on @ziheng 's feed, the Salted Egg Soft Shell Crab ($12.80). Most expensive dish of the night, but still reasonable, with a generous portion. The soft shell crab was much thicker than what you'd get from casual Japanese dining joints. Love how the salted egg was fried together as a batter. Salted egg taste could be stronger.

Alas, another gem within the Toa Payoh Lorong 1 area, where you have vendors like Creamier, Frozen, Hua Fong Kee, Tian Tian Lai, The Daily Press located within its vicinity.
Riding the salted egg craze is this soft shell crab. Succulent and juicy, each piece is surrounded by a layer of golden crispy fried batter. Salted egg yolk taste could be more pronounced, but it serves up as a really good appetizer for your meal.
Also try the Fried Rice and the Terryaki Pork Ribs. -

Unlike some places which drenches this dish with salted egg sauce, Two Chefs adds the salted egg in the marinate instead, where the salted egg yolk is infused together with the fried flour batter, leading to a crisp and flavorful outside with a soft interior - to me this is how salted egg sotong tastes best! Unfortunately, this pales in comparison to what I had at Old House @ Neil Road. Nonetheless, it's good enough for me to crave for this every Saturday afternoon :p

Although the portions were small, these pork pieces packed a punch. Nice and tender, the sweet sauce and coarse pepper bits complemented them marvelously. One of the star dishes if you're getting some dishes to share, along with their Butter Chicken and Salted Egg Sotong.

These prawn rolls come in 3 different sizes - Small ($8), Medium ($12), Large ($16) - with the same number of pieces per dollar. You can tell that it is homemade by the taste of the minced meat and the individual pieces of cabbage and carrot in it that fell apart upon each bite. One of the dishes to order, but perhaps just getting a small one would do.

Hands down the BEST salted egg dish in town (literally). Located on the top floor of the adolescent-filled Far East Plaza, New Station Bar is joined with other little hawker stalls selling inexpensive hawker fare in the otherwise expensive district 10. Home to many other zichar dishes, it is these salted egg pork ribs that stand out. On my first visit, I remember seeing every single person/group having a serving of these, whether it was an individual rice dish or for sharing. I'm not sure what makes this dish work - from the crispy yet fluffy fried pork ribs, to the creamy and runny salted egg sauce, to the curry leaves that glitter the plate - the combination of all these ingredients make for a truly remarkable and affordable dish. I was sold the first time I came and I will continue to be floored whenever I visit this humble yet honest stall.

The salted egg sauce here leans towards the dry side, having a viscous texture where you can feel little bits of the salted egg with each bite. This dish comes in chicken and pork; I find the pork better as the richness pairs and matches up with the intensity of the salted egg. New station still ranks as the best salted egg dish for me!

Crispy with a lighter touch of prawn paste. What makes these wings great is the crisp together with the signature chili sauce that isn't too spicy and has a bit of that bean paste flavour. One of the better har cheong gai's I've had!

"I love eating. But I hate getting fat. I love eating. But I only want to eat the best. I love eating. But I'm reluctant to spend too much." The above are a few paradoxes that describe my love-hate relationship with food. Yet at the same time they define my principles for choosing the places which I love to eat: 1) Hearty 2) Tasty 3) Worthy (of my money)
