The star of the dish absolutely blew my expectations out of the water – incredibly light, fluffy, buttery and crumbly, the warm and pillowy hotcakes were good enough to eat on their own, but paired with the jammy berry compote, fresh berries, and the cold contrast of the vanilla ice cream, and you've got an absolutely delicious dessert on your hands.

We tried out many stalls and dishes in Tampines Round Market but this was my favorite find here! Though not as crispy as we wanted, it was done evenly throughout, soft in the middle and slightly crispier around the ends. The masalah filling was generous and tasty, with a good amount of spice that won't scare off non-spicy diners. If you don't fancy Masalah, choose from other ingredients like egg, cheese, butter, etc. If only this is nearer to me! #BurppleBestofTampines

Hidden in the basement of Cuppage Plaza is this izakaya that sees mostly Japanese salarymen — a sure sign that this is as authentic as it gets. The space is cosy, homely and small, so come with a party of no more than four. Start with the Nebaneba ($8.30) — a salad mix of natto and okra — a favourite amongst the Japanese. Then move on to the Mentaiko Cabbage ($10.60) — cabbage leaves stir-fried and redolent with so much wok hei that it puts zi char vegetables to shame. Recommended here are their value-for-money sets ($25). There are plenty options to choose from, including yakiniku, sashimi and omu rice. Each set comes with a side of super fresh sashimi, miso soup, rice and wafer. Reservations highly recommended.

(It helps that Knots is primarily a furniture/floral service space.) I rarely find sufficient reason to fawn over dining spaces, but I am positively infatuated with Knots' Japanesey combination of woody, flora-infused, grey-walled and hip-modern cafe vibes. It's an Instagrammer's wet dream.

And I have to say, the Monjayaki was definitely a Super good experience to have. It is a 'wetter' version of Okonomiyaki where you use small spade-like cutlery to scoop up small amount and shove it straight into your mouth!!! Fun fact: Okonomiyaki are from Osaka while Monjayaki are enjoyed by people from Tokyo 🤔
Perhaps the last Singaporean to actually try this for the first time; so lucky to still find them open during the evening! Noodles carries a good bite and were rather springy, while the sauce carried a nice hint of savoury flavours and was really shiok when tossed in the moderately spicy Sambal that comes as an option. The sides were a smart option; going for a slight Japanese feel, it comes with a molten egg with slurpy yolk and sous vide charsiew that was tender and soft as well as a deep-fried potato-wrapped prawn for some crunchiness. Servings of wanton is also generous, given the fresh full-sized prawn that is wrapped within. It's not going to be very mind-blowing, but this is still highly recommended; it's the effort placed in this bowl of noodles by the Gen-Y hawkers with the emphasis on quality that makes this so different from the usual.
At the far end of Blk 7 Jalan Batu is an old-style coffeeshop that houses the famous "Tanjong Rhu Pau". If you go early in the morning, you can see the team at work. Like a quiet, well-oiled machine, they crank out each "pau" by hand: flattening out the dough, placing a ball of filling on it, then stretching and pulling the dough to wrap around it. The "pau's" then get laid out on trays. After which those trays are organised and stacked in the steamer. All of this takes time so usually, they don't start selling the "pau's" till around mid to late morning although you can tuck into "lo mai gai" or "png chye" whilst waiting as they're ready first.
The "pau" that always seems to sell out fastest is the "Yin Yang", comprising of lotus paste, red paste and salted egg yolk. Another hot favourite is the "char siew pau" with its juicy, deep-red sweet meat filling. Prices start at 60 cents for the red bean and lotus paste petite "pau's".
Situated in an idyllic corner in Changi overlooking the sea, Little Island Brewing Co is a microbrewery that offers an extensive selection of self-brewed craft beers as well as grilled meats. Start with their Beer Belly Porchetta ($12) — slow-cooked Berkshire belly marinated in coffee, cumin and chilli with salsa verde. If a burger is what you crave, then their deliciously umami Short Rib Burger ($25) should satisfy. If you're lucky, you might be able to catch a glimpse of their highly elusive Beeramisu — sponge soaked in Imperial Stout with mascarpone, coconut sugar and cocoa!
After you select the pieces of "yong tau foo", the hawker gives them a quick deep-fry for a yummy crunchy coating. The "chee cheong fun" that's kept piping hot in a large steamer is then taken out, cut into bite-sized portions and transferred to a plate. I was seriously enamoured with its silky smoothness. It's good enough to rival my favourite at Hong Lim Hawker Centre.
The stall has set meals too for ease of ordering. I noticed quite a few customers loading up on their yam cake and "zhang" (glutinous rice dumplings). I am definitely considering to give those a try the next time.

Good to know, no GST and service charge and there's free coffee with any purchase (cakes included)! Sad to know, the free coffee was made using instant coffee machines.
Raspberry and Lychee Macaron (SGD 7.60) - Soft macaron shells with slight crisp. Chio and pretty good on its own.

I doubt you can find "popiah" fresher than the ones from "Ann Chin" as they make their "popiah" skin right then and there at their stall. The one I visited was at Gim Huat Coffeeshop at Blk 24, Sin Ming Road - not sure why the Geotag keeps insisting it is in Chinatown Complex even when I chose the right address 😳
It was hypnotic to watch the man at work, deftly creating each skin by pressing a big ball of dough in a circular wiping motion on the hot surface of the flat pan. As he rotated between the three pans in front of him, it was apparent his timing was immaculate. By the time he'd finished rolling out the third skin, the first one was perfectly cooked and ready to be peeled off and added to the pile.
An elderly lady stood next to him, separated by a narrow gap. She busily built each "popiah" by first smearing the skins with sweet dark "tnee chnio", chilli sambal and raw garlic paste before piling on stewed turnips, fresh bean sprouts, shredded lettuce, chopped eggs, ground peanuts and loads of that wonderful crunchy batter bits. Every bite of the end result was a pleasure. I could really taste just how fresh every part of my "popiah" was.
By the way, "Ann Chin Popiah" that's been around since 1958, does takeaway and home deliveries these days. See that number in the top left corner of my photo? That's the one to call to place your orders in advance. Talk about convenience :)
They rotated shifts to maximum the profit and provided all day round of fresh bread. Their promo - Any 3 breads for only S$3!!! Their pastry was one of the better ones I ever tried. Even it was cold, the crumbly texture still remained. The spicy curry filling made it unstoppable.
