This was so good! The KL Hokkien mee and BBQ chicken wings here were excellent too.
Located at one end of Jalan Alor is this stall that is renowned for its finger-licking-fantastic chicken wings and spicy chilli sauce. Even locals who claim everything is overpriced at Jalan Alor's eateries, will venture here for the sweetish barbecued wings (so that should tell you how amaaaaazing they are).
After gorging on mini mountains of them over two separate trips, my advice is to visit the stall later in the evening. Somehow the wings we had just after they started operations at 5.30pm, didn't taste as fresh or juicy as the ones we had when we visited closer to midnight.
Seriously.. Just take my money. Incredibly flavorful roasted pork paired with noodles done al dente. Recommended by one of our Burpple local experts. Skip the touristy places at the head of Jalan Alor. You have to try this when you're here!
Rice vermicelli: too fine. Chicken: chunky chicken meat (some with bones) instead of using chicken strips. Laksa base: overwhelm by its tastelessness. Its 3 big prawns (not fresh) are not enough to rescue this Sarawak Laksa from the pit of poor imitation.
By far the best Char Siew I've eaten. I always come back here for their char siew. No other restaurants or top chicken rice shop places has given me this texture and flavour of char siew.
I know I sound very intense and passionate about the "Art of Char Siew" but we're talking about perfect food here which is an art of taste to me. 😤
Alright cut the nonsense. Hahah I love the Char Siew here because the skin is glazed and grilled to perfect crispyness. The char on the skin will sometimes stick to your teeth and the pork fat will blend perfectly with the meat and melt in your mouth. Sweet and flavorful in every bite. Not too fat! Of course if you're late, all the good parts will be sold off. Good just by itself and with rice.
Normally the char siews I have are not sticky-crispy nor as tender. I've eaten this for many years and I still can't find a substitute for it nor has it dropped standards. Besides pork, they have a similar glaze with chicken drumstick.
However, this restaurant's rice is sometimes not cooked well and you might be served with half cooked rice.
They have other HK style food too besides chicken rice. Another recommendation is their King Prawn Curry Fried rice. Mhmm! Will capture its picture the next time I order that and make a thorough review. 😉
Famous for their yuan-yang drink as well. Perfect balance between coffee and tea.
Food: 8/10 Price: 8/10 (I usually order the full set which has rice, char siew and salted egg which was about RM 10.90 - LOVE eating with salted egg. But I'm not too sure about the price of a plate of char siew by itself.)
The fried rice at Foh Foh is recommended with good reason. For RM5.50 your fried rice is topped with a fried egg destined to ooze all over, mingling with their awesome homemade chili sauce. Burppler Justin Lim advises "be sure to either come early (11am), late (2pm) or be prepared to wait for 45 minutes to an hour". It'll be worth the wait.
Without a doubt, the Hainanese pork chop (RM10) and roti babi (RM8) are must-trys here! The tender pork chops are served with sautéed onions, a dash of peas and carrots, and a handful of potato wedges - all drenched in gravy. Essentially French toast stuffed with pulled pork and onions, this roti babi really hits the spot as the perfect comfort food. End your meal on a sweet note with their delicious marble cake and kaya swiss roll!
After 67 years in business, Soong Kee still maintains its reputed high standards. In this restaurant, slurping isn't rude - it's the norm. The best part of the dish is probably the meaty, firm beef balls; you know it's a good meatball when it can bounce without falling apart. But it’s really the juicy minced pork that the noodles are tossed in that keeps you coming back for more. These noodles are certainly a treat, despite its modest price tag!
The traditional Beef Noodle that had been passed to the third generation, flavorful minced beef on the special made noodle. Served with clear broth
The Hokkien noodle that fried with charcoal fire gave a very nice "wok hei" to this dish. However the quality had dropped compare to last visit
