Good Hawker Delights!
Located at Whampoa Drive Market Food Centre, this new hawker stall, run by a very young enterprising couple, serves up birthday meesua which their Henghua grandma used to cook for the entire household. I am always curious to try out traditional family recipe and I am happy that they have taken the bold plunge to share it. The soup is clean and robust, and you can certainly taste the many hours that are put into simmering the bones. One look at the uneven width of the noodles and you can tell that it is handmade. And if you hadn't notice, each bowl comes with a very generous portion of ingredients. I got the $6 bowl which had clams, minced pork, sliced egg, abalones, braised mushrooms and braised pork belly. Felt like my birthday with this bowl of homely, comforting, msg free meesua. Do note that they are only opened during dinner time as it takes a long time to prepare (and young people can't wake up early). Most stalls here open at night and you can also grab some satays and sambal stingrays to go with this!
Good braised duck with a sweet and savoury dark sauce. Duck was well cooked and wasn't too tough nor chewy. Don't forget to get the herbal soup too! There seems to be a perpetual line here though.
Soft carrot cake with so much eggy goodness and a generous heap of cai po! You can also choose to add on prawns which will be chopped up and added to the carrot cake. I prefer the black version (which is only available in the morning), but I also cannot resist a good plate of white carrot cake!
Good, comforting bowl of congee at $2.50! Flavourful and incredibly smooth. Get a (better) youtiao from You Tiao Man (#02-05) and you will have the best of both worlds.
Seng Bee hainanese chicken rice was good! Chicken was well cooked and tender. Half a chicken cost $13. The White beehoon was rather bland but the generous portion of fresh fish made up for it. This is the large portion which was $12.
Recently opened stall (02-39) selling bak chor mee. Quite decent, the noodles were savoury with a good bite to it. The large fishballs were fresh and bouncy! Go for the small bowl ($3), the large bowl ($4) with two frozen prawns was not worth it.
So much fresh seafood in one plate! Love the saltiness of the pork lard with the flavourful broth. The beehoon had a slight wok hei to it. It got more and more bland but it was better with the soy sauce chilli mixed in.
Must have to get when eating here! This $2 bowl of chendol was awesome. Light coconut milk with gula melaka that wasn't saccharine. The highlight for me was the soft and fragrant pandan jelly noodles, which had me wanting more!
Decent bowl of white Lor mee. Love the small pieces of pork belly! The chilli is a must!
I love how thin the soon kueh skin is and the generous filling within. Can eat them for days...Didn't like the png kueh though, which was bland and I was put off by the celery.
Chicken is tender but rice was kinda plain. Great chilli as usual. Still prefer the branch at Goldenshoe, the sauce for the chicken is not as sweet, much more fragrant and addictive with the more oily rice!
The rice here is pretty impressive - well cooked, lightly aromatic and not too oily. Chicken was tender, but certain parts were a bit powdery. Chicken skin had some gelatin which I loved!
