SG: Eastie eats
Squid ink fried rice here is always tasty, and looks pretty too! The lunch set is a steal at 18++ for two courses, compared to evening a la carte prices.
š : unsheltered parking at springvale (parallel parking skills required), alternatively there is reverse parking at the block next door (where kfc is)
This version of fish and chips is perfect for me as I prefer my fish breaded rather than battered, and shoestring fries rather than thick cut fries. The fish is very chunky yet tender. Most of the dishes here are pretty good actually- comfort food (Western) at reasonable prices.
.
š” : Fairly quiet during lunchtime and on weekday nights, but be sure to reserve for weekends.
š : free curbside parking (parallel parking skills required).
Never been a fan of mall restaurants but this cosy fusion bistro caught my eye when I was wandering around Jewel the other day. The green curry linguine was an instant hit for me - pasta done perfectly al dente, in a comforting green curry sauce balanced with tangy mango salad. The green chillies had a nice little kick to them too! #burpplebeyond is a bonus but I'd gladly pay full price for this.
.
Drinks wise I preferred the espresso martini ($15++) to their in house G&T ($12++), made from a blend of beefeater and roku. Will be back for more.
I actually liked the pain de campagne much more! No expectations perhaps. Perfect crust, chewy and light inside (and not sour). They have it in two sizes, mini and full size.
Open from 11am for lunch. One of the 3 best options in the East if you like your CKT not too sweet, with pork lard, and full of wok hei (most Singaporeans prefer the soggy, sickly sweet style of CKT).
.
Ps. The other two Eastie options with similar taste profile are Dong Ji and Joo Chiat ckt. You're welcome.
Pps. Real Easties do NOT eat laofuzi or hill st.
Only available at opening, 1230h and 1430h. Due to its popularity you either have to queue in the heat, come twice (once to order and once to pick up 1-2h later), or pre order. Pre ordering involves playing a "fastest fingers first" game at 4pm on Saturdays, which only works if you are organised (set alarm clock) + tech savvy.
.
Is it worth the effort though? It's certainly one of the better croissants in sg, since you get it fresh out of the oven unlike many other bakeries. It's crispy on the outside rather than flaky, and the inside is chewy and a bit wet, rather than fluffy. But then again you can't get the ideal croissant anywhere in sg so.... A good option if you can't fly overseas. Lucky you if you live nearby.
Not mind blowing like the grilled pork, but a fun snack to have with drinks. The cornflakes give these juicy little nuggets some extra crunch, while the wasabi mayo dressing provides a nice kick. Tldr Like KFC popcorn chicken, but better!
Honestly we didn't know what to expect from the new menu after getting so used to Garang Grill, but this grilled pork blew us away with its smokey flavour and juicy tenderness. Limited servings available as it takes a long time to prepare, so just grab if you see it in the specials board!
.
š”Pairs perfectly with the grilled cauliflower with its sinful ranch dressing balanced with the tartness of pomegranate molasses.
Like butterfly, but better, cos you can stuff these savoury-sweet cups with tasty meat filling. Also, photogenic af. Chilli lovers should request for chilli oil to give an extra oomph.
.
Other favorite dishes at shang social include the seafood porridge (sans the rice crispies) and the savoury tofu.
.
My least favorite dish is the szechuan chix cos its not authentic AT ALL with the weird peanut not-spicy sauce (more like a pseudo chinois dish for angmos and those who don't actually like spicy food).
.
š”: My favorite table is actually the bar because there's never any queue for the bar and you can order from all 3 menus when you sit at the bar. Well... also because I like alcohol š
HOWEVER, I hear that the silly folks in mgt are planning to shut the bar soon which is a tragedy (are you hearing this Shangrila??)
Ps cafe finally available in the hood! As with all other ps cafes, a bit expensive, especially the overpriced drinks, but they do how to create the perfect ambience for each location. In this case, the sound of waves play constantly over the sound system. Contrived, but somehow it works. I prefer this beach location more than the Fullerton one, but my favorites are probably still Ann siang or raffles city as they just look more.. European?
.
š : carpark D3 (erp parking) is closest
š” : Avoid weekends for now as they just opened end Nov 2019 and you know how Singaporeans rush to be the first then complain about the crowd. Weekdays are fine.
Achieving 65% of Malaysia standard is no mean feat. This hokkien mee has the requisite glistening pork lard oil, but could do with more wok hei. I would recommend queuing for this over the other popular stall here (penang ckt) which is very average.
This is a new addition to the menu, so tasty and a perfect starter for sharing. Sadly it only comes with four pieces of bread (I think 6 would be just nice as the squid ink is quite salty and flavorful so you can't just pile it onto one pc) and they actually wanted to charge us additional $4 when we asked if we could have more bread. Pls don't be so cheap! It's bread!
