Mango Kakigori

$11.80 Ā· 6 Reviews

Lunch / 11 Jan 2018: kakigori on a cold rainy afternoon is always a happy affair, esp the pretty decent one here. It’s really sad that there’s so many bingsu shops here but so few kakigori’s. Can someone bring in more kakigori flavours pls?

Babao Dessert serves up traditional Chinese desserts kakigori, which is essentially Japan’s answer to Singapore’s ice kachang. The two versions that were a hit with us were Babao’s cocoa and mango kakigori.

The mango kakigori is delightfully fruity and sweet with the mango infused ice, and there’s massive chunks of mango within all that ice. The creamy and mildly sweet non-dairy cream on top of every kakigori helps to make the dessert richer and more indulgent.

The cocoa kakigori is basically just milo shaved ice. That’s not a bad thing, however, as it’s rich and chocolatey, and there’s even a few milo nuggets buried within! It’s a bit like a chocolate ice cream, but a lot thinner and free of dairy. Not bad at all.

Quality desserts served with pride & passion here at @babaodessert - for fans of durian, matcha, mango & anyone who needs a dessert fix in general. & I'd honestly go crazy if they ever launch an avocado series.

Set along South Bridge Road, a short stroll from the drinking enclaves of both Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, Babao Dessert is the place to go for an Asian dessert fix. Expect traditional Chinese sweet soups like Rice Dumpling in Ginger Soup ($3) and Mango Sago ($4.50), alongside more modern sweets like Japanese shaved ice (kakigori). Burpple Tastemaker Vanessa Kou says that the kakigori here resembles Korean bingsu. She really liked the Cocoa Kakigori ($8.80). Expect a rich, malty treat with crunchy Milo nougats buried under the mountain of shaved ice. The Mango Kakigori ($11.80) is a fruitier option packed with chunks of freshly cut mango. The creamy espuma topping adds a richer mouthfeel. Pro-tip: They open till 3am on Fridays and Saturdays — perfect for chilling out with your drinking kakis.

Resembling more to the Korean Bingsu than the usual Kakigori that we get here, Babao Dessert’s line of shaved ice are fairly decent and pretty promising. At $11.80, the Mango Kakigori thankfully didn’t taste like artificially syrup-ed ice and came with a good amount of freshly cut mango chunks inside. Quite refreshing. The Cocoa Kakigori ($8.80) similarly was a safe combination with the familiar flavour of our favourite malty beverage present throughout the fine bits of ice. Buried underneath the mount was also crunchy Milo nougats which went surprisingly well with the soft, fluffy non-dairy cream atop that was further dusted with peanut powder. And to make the treat richer add on a choice of toppings - ice cream, sago (50 cents) or mini mochis ($1) like those in our Mango Kakigori!
