Steamed Fish

Would you travel from one end of the country to the other for a good steamed fish? Well, if you’re true blue foodie and love fish enough, I bet you would go all the way to Jurong East to try Zai Shun Curry Fish Head. Despite its name, you’ll see the majority of tables with a plate of steamed fish rather than the stall’s namesake dish.

Before it was awarded Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide, it was once the hidden gem of the West. I’ve been here before it was accorded the status in the red book.

Choose your fish and cooking style that you want when you order. It’s then freshly steamed and served to you. I had the Steamed Song Fish Head in Bean Paste (Market Price) which is ordered by many tables here.

The fish head is steamed with fermented soy bean paste. Deep fried lard bits, chilli and spring onions are added for garnish.

Unlike many places, the steamed fish here is very fresh and done just right. Not overcooked or fishy. And I truly love the umaminess of the fermented soy bean paste and munching on those crispy lard bits. Who said steamed fish was always healthy?

In true Teochew style, have your steamed fish with Teochew porridge. Appreciating this watery bowl of rice grains is something that comes with age.

I can’t wait for the dining in group limit to be raised to 5 in order to have their whole steamed fish.

Daylily 金针花 has a slight sour taste, and I don't think you can find it at most places

Meicai was rather bland, but probably for the best too

Pork was good but theres too much tofu in there. luckily the texture is similar

Generous amount of rice, I barely finished it.

Overall comfort food, feel free to get their more popular and unique items, esp the steamed fish.

PS came at 1045sharp, no queue. Usually lunch hour they're absolutely packed

Although it’s called curry fish head, most people come here for the steamed fish. This fish was huge! It’s thick and firm and well-cooked in the Cantonese style. Price is very reasonable given the size of the fish.

Steamed w bean paste

Not as natural a fit as the hong Kong Style, but surprisingly light and citrusy bean sauce went not bad with the steamed Fish either. Pork lard was abit out of place tho, not that it's bad.

But since Fish was perfect as usual, it was really enjoyable.

P. S. At times they steam it for 7mins only lol, depending on the conditions of the steamer

Nothing quite beats having Teochew porridge dishes with my family at Zai Shun on a weekend. Aside from their popular steamed fish, their simple and comforting spread of classic dishes like handmade fish cake, bitter gourd fried egg (with bits of salted egg white too! ❤️), meat patty with salted fish, chap chye (mixed vegetable stew), hae bee hiam (spicy dry shrimp) are equally satisfying and delicious too!

But I was running late + there was a massive traffic jam due to roadworks. So we ended up dabaoing back home for lunch! We were shocked when the bill for this came up to $35.40 for 3 pax! (Haha but ok, there are 3 meat dishes) we had the fish cake ($6), salted egg minced meat (reviews said it was $9), ngor hiang and prawn paste fried chicken wings (we are guessing this costs $8-$9 each) and chap chye (guessing $4+)? We ordered 3 porridge as well, and the portions were huge! (As compared to dining in where you usually only get a small bowl of porridge). I liked that the fishcake tasted fresh! The salted egg minced meat was abit too salty for me. The prawn paste chicken wing didn't have the strong prawn paste taste (like yishun hawker's). Ngor hiang was good (but I don't think there was prawns in it!) This place is actually more famous for its steamed fish / curry fish head. But it was too expensive for our pockets hehe! #burpple #burpplesg #zaishuncurryfishhead #zaishuncurryfishheadseafood #food #foodiesg #sgfoodie #whati8today #8dayseat #vscofoodie #iweeklyfood #foodporn #foodstagram #vscofood #foodphotography #sgmakan #sgmakandiary #sgfoodstagram #singaporeeats #exploresingaporeeats #exploresg #whatsgoodhere #sgfoodie

Worth a journey to the west is this zi char stall tucked in a humble coffeeshop. Enjoy the freshest catch either in the Curry Fish Head or the stellar Steamed Fish with a delightful soy-based sauce. Complete the meal with the complex Bitter gourd With Egg and Salted Egg and tangy Golden Needle! Take note that they are closed on Wednesdays.
