Got to try this danish from Ah B Bakery while looking for other pastry options since AJ Delights’ queue is always long
The pastry is fluffy while still sturdy, but quite a mess to eat with the flaky texture (maybe I’m just a messy eater lol). The burnt custard filling is enjoyable - it’s silky and smooth, sweet but with good bitter notes as well
Easily one of my new neighbourhood bread faves (disclaimer: I haven’t had the fair share of pastries tried) 😅

Those who know us well will probably know how we typically aren’t fans of bakeries that are situated in hawker centres — that being said, there were a handful that we have tried over the years such as Syiok at Beauty World Centre that we have had a liking for considering how they were pretty inventive with their creations. Ah B Bakery does have a standalone bakery that is in a style typical of neighbourhood bakeries at The Woodgrove in Woodlands. That being said, they do also operate from a stall situated within Alexandra Village Food Centre — the stall having been in operations since late 2022, and is situated in a unit within the middle of the food centre. Being a bakery that occupies one typically-sized shop unit in the food centre, Ah B Bakery understandably serves up a smaller variety of items at Alexandra Village Food Centre as opposed to their standalone shop at The Woodgrove — the stall also seemingly being focused around its muffin offerings, whilst also serving up a variety of danishes, tarts and a small variety of bread. Notable offerings which we had observed during our visit include the Orh Nee Muffin, Milky Danish, Red Bean Mochi Tart and Salted Egg Lava Bread — just to name a few.
One of the items that really caught our attention whilst skimming through the various items that they have to offer in the display case was the Curry Potato Tart. Whilst the dessert tarts are quite an easy find in neighbourhood bakeries such as that of Ah B Bakery, the Curry Potato Tart stood out for us since savoury tarts of such nature where there is a fusion element within does seem pretty much of a rare find. Taking a bite into the Curry Potato Tart, it is noted that the cookie crust does crumble apart rather easily; this also meant that the tart base does somewhat disintegrates and crumbles into a mess after withstanding one or two more bites, but the initial bite is still fairly firm without much effort to bite through. Another unique part about the tart base here is how they have seemingly stuck to using a sweetened tart base rather than one that is more neutral-tasting; while this sounds odd on first mention, we found that it was quite a well-made decision; the sweetness was able to well compliment the fragrant and lightly spicy curry filling within. Laced with a cheese crust over the top, the curry potato filling does dislodge from the bottom of the tart base eventually, but we liked how the curry potato filling was filled with moist and aptly rich curry gravy and soft potatoes — the level of spiciness being comfortable for those who have lower tolerance to spiciness in general.
Having tried not only the Curry Potato Tart during our visit to Ah B Bakery but also their Apple Danish, we did feel that the highlight of Ah B Bakery would really be on the items which they are doing with a local twist. No doubt the Apple Danish was one which we felt was well-executed, but the Curry Potato Tart still stands out considering how it is a unique and inventive take that just stands for itself. Whilst it is an item which we found to have some room for improvement, it was still one that was hugely satisfying and with a refreshing change from the usual tarts that we are familiar with — something that is definitely worth commending. The prices of the bakes are fairly reasonable considering how they are a neighbourhood-ly establishment after all; the most expensive offering which they have would be the Milky Danish at $3, with the muffins averaging at a price point below $2.50 and tarts ranging from $1.80 to $2.20. Being Yam Paste lovers, we have already set our eyes on giving the Orh Nee Muffin a go some other time — definitely something worth checking as a snack or a post-meal dessert the next time we dine at Alexandra Village Food Centre!
