Disclaimer first: I have been to a few outstanding middle eastern restaurants that have managed to blown me away with their food. As such, I thought Sofra's version of the hummus was a little too oily and mild. It might be nicer if there were chopped onions and tomatoes which could accentuate the taste of the chickpeas.
This one was a huge disappointment as I still prefer my tamago hot. In addition, it was a little to sweet for my liking and it could afford to be a little softer as well.
I usually for anything with Salmon and aburi together because these two are literally the perfect match. My first bite of this sushi was that it was a little too dry and it tasted a little like the famous sushi roll from Koh grill except that it didn't give me a lasting impression. Also do note that the Burpple 1 for 1 isn't available on sundays
I saw too many recommendations of this dish to pass it up and besides my everlasting love for scallop meant that this became a must order. I like how the noodles were firm but it would be great if it were a little less oily because I felt that I was literally drinking oil down my throat with each mouth. The scallops were definitely the highlight as it was succulent and chunky which were a delight to the taste buds.
I stumbled upon this gem of a place after a workout session and I briefly recalled it's the famous noodle house that opens up till late. The mee sua looked seemingly plain but packs a punch of satisfaction. The noodles were smooth and complemented the chilli and vinegar well such that there is always a lingering sour taste to it.
My first thought was that the food here was really affordable. Most dishes are between 12 to 19 dollars and with Burpple 1 for 1, it's literally a steal. I went for my favourite aglio aglio because it's is literally the hardest kind of pasta to make. The ingredients are simple but it's getting the proportion right that differentiates a good one from a mediocre one. I was over the moon when I realise they managed to get the garlic and olive oil taste into the pasta which was firm enough. The only thing that feel through was the prawns as they were a little too overcooked.
I have always loved the sea bass steamed with lots of ginger and chilli paid and was keen to try it with sambal paste instead. I wishes the sambal paste could much more spicy as it was a tad too sweet and it did not bring about the addictive kick that is synonymous with sambal. The seabass was well cooked as it was fresh and succulent.
With the Burpple 1 for 1 main and appetizer deal, I decided to try the dishes that seems unique. Prata and raw salmon could potentially be a good combination; one creamy and fresh while the other crisp. However, this one did not live up to its expectations as the prata was hard and flat. It did not have the nice layered feel which made me feel like I am biting through a hard layer to get to the salmon.
I thought laksa and chilli crab was a rather dangerous combination since the former has a more creamy texture while the latter is generally more spicy and sweet. Babasan delivered well considering how the strong aroma of the laksa leaves were evident and there were also traces of chilli paste which was much milder. Overall, a bold attempt of two of Singaporeans favourite dishes!
If there is one thing that is strongly associated with Vietnamese culture, it has to be the beef pho. Pho seems like an easy dish to make but it's really hard to get it right; the broth has to be tasty, the beef has to be tender, the noodles has to be just right and so on. The verdict is little Vietnam has delivered given how I have been to Vietnam several times both north and south and their version does come close to some of the best pho I have tried. The noodles literally slips off your tongue and the broth compliments it so well. My only ask if that the beef slices could be thinner and softer!
With the onset of festival season, I decided that it was time I had something refreshing and light and the first time that came to mind had to be Vietnamese food. I like how the spring rolls are so simple with just vermicelli and prawns and still managed to be so delicious with the dipping sauce.
It has been a while since I last patronised little Vietnam and it amazes me that the quality of food has actually gotten better in the past one year. The Banh Xeo in my opinion is a must order as it's crispy on the outside yet still soft and moist on the inside. They were rather generous with the prawns and pork belly pieces for only 8 dollars.
