The Ondeh Ondeh is one the simplest-looking desserts on display there.

It reminds me of Kinder Surprise, but even more surprising!

Breaking the thin, delicate green outer shell of the Ondeh Ondeh open, you will realise this dessert is not as simple as it seems.

The gula melaka sauce dribbled out from the top (layer) first, revealing the light brown (soft, pudding-like) caramel coconut cremeux below it. Right at the bottom is the almond sponge cake. The pandan mousse right beneath the delicate green shell, encapsulating within the Ondeh Ondeh, is a taste reminiscent of my childhood!

Incredibly amazing!

Ordered my food at almost 5 in the evening.

The dishes were all piping hot, and they were all very delicious.

I had 2 meat and 2 vegetable dishes for $5. I ordered cabbage, curry chicken drumstick, stir fried sliced potatoes and fried chicken (pieces) coated with a very savoury sauce.

My favourite is the fried chicken with the savoury sauce. Amazing dish!

There will be a queue from time to time. However, on a weekday evening, one can find table/ seat without too much difficulty, esp after they expanded by buying over the shop next door.

Parking is slightly inconvenient though.

Pricing is very reasonable.
My hub ordered cabbage, chicken chop, braised tau pok, and fish cake.
I had cabbage (asked for extra serving), chicken chop, and a fried egg.
Total cost:$8.90

The food was absolutely delicious! Love it when my plate of rice is saturated with gravy; both the braised sauce and the curry! This is the first curry rice I have tried many years back and until today, is still my favourite curry rice. How can a plate of something look this messy and yet taste so good?!

My only grouse is that the food on display are all not labelled. It can be a bit difficult to decipher what the fried items/ dishes are.

One of the most expensive traditional tau sar piahs in SG.

Love the supremely light, flaky pastry and the smooth, fragrant, and sufficiently sweet mung bean filling.

One of the best as well.

They can be a tad oily as well.

Just outside Chinatown point is Poh Guan Cake House; 531 Upper Cross Street, #01-57 Hong Lim Complex, 050531.

Poh Guan sells excellent tau sar piah that is on par with Thye Moh Chan's standard (in terms of quality/ taste of their tau sar piah), but at a much lower price, maybe around two-third the cost of Thye Moh Chan.

Bought from both and compared... Really can't tell any difference.

You can try both out. Maybe you can.

Located at Blk 416, Bedok North Ave 2, Singapore 460416. Opens 10am-6.45pm and close on Friday. A very old and traditional shop that sells heavenly fragrant breads and cakes! Their star product is their Curry Bun which cost $1.70 each and is freshly out for sell from 12.55-2.30pm! Their bread has an unique flavourful butter smell at any point of time regardless it’s hot or the next day.. The kind of smell whereby it’s not found in any other bread out there! Besides, it’s stuffed fully with curry paste, huge chunk of potatoes and even a couple pieces of chicken!! You should try them yourself as it’s One of the BEST Curry Bun out there! •

Timings of each bread, cakes:
🍞11am - custard cream puff & muffin 🥧11.45am - egg cupcake 🍞12.55 - 2.30pm - curry, hae bee hiam, coconut bun
🍰 1.15pm - Banana Cake

After much dilemma, we decided to try Mao Shan Wang (MSW) durian out even though this is not the peak season for MSW. The staff chose 1 for us and the durian weighed 1.6kg+. At $22 per kg, the (whole) fruit costed us about $35. Not the cheapest time to have MSW.

MSW durian is also commonly known as Butter Durian, Musang King or Cat Mountain King Durian. Till today, it is still the favourite variety of durian in Singapore.

It has a creamy texture (though not as creamy as the red prawn durian), beautiful yellow flesh, and is sweet in taste with slight bitter notes. Absolutely yummy!!!

In Singapore, most 'cheating' cases revolve around MSW durians, for the rest of the other varieties of durians are sold at much lower prices, making it not so worthwhile for the sellers to con people. Knowing how to spot a Mao Shan Wang may up your bets of getting good MSW durians at good prices, but many dishonest sellers have many (underhand) tactics or may even coerced/ intimidate you into accepting their deals. The safest bet, to me, is still to go to an honest durian seller with a good reputation.

Combat durian may not be the cheapest but at least we got good quality durians and every cent we paid was well worth it!

Will definitely recommend/ go back again.

Date visited: 26/6/2018 (Wed, 5.45pm)

Visited on a weekday at an offpeak hour to avoid the crowds.

Parking was no issue either at this hour. Turn left just BEFORE the shop to access the carpark.

Decided to try one (whole fruit) out. The staff chose 1 for us and the durian weighed 1.3kg+. At $12 per kg, the (whole) fruit costed us $16.

Service was very good! 👍🏽👍🏽
From the staff who recommended us durians, to the staff taking photos for us, I have nothing, but good things to say about them; friendly, helpful, humble and hard-working.

They offer free plain water, free tissues, free gloves for those who don't want to eat durians with the bare hands, vacuum packing services for those who want to takeaway or even bring overseas, and even OZONE water for washing your hands after eating durians!

BTW they sell (Thai) coconut juice too, for those who want to 'flush out' the 'heat' after bingeing on durians. Chilled and sweet!

---

Red prawn durians, also commonly known as Ang Hei (dialect) or Hong Xia (Mandarin), are in season now. Rich pickings! Yay!

The red prawn durians usually take on a dusty brown colour though the one chosen had a more greenish tinge.

The shells are generally thick, as with the core, making them a challenge to open. So, it is good to have them open the fruit there for you there than to buy the whole fruit home and struggle with it.

The flesh of the red prawn durian is usually (more) orangey-red though the one we had was a little more of a subtly orangey colour.

Still, the durian was awesome. Love red prawn durians as they are one of the sweetest durians you can get. No hint of bitterness here. That creamy, sticky, honeyed flesh was simply yummy!

After we were done with this fruit, we knew we had to get another fruit! MSW or red prawn?!

Can't recall the exact price, but it should be somewhere between $6-7.

Merely ice-cream on the whole is soft; not compacted, less dense than ice-cream from most other ice-cream palours. Smooth, sufficiently sweet and easy to dig into.

The yakult flavoured ice-cream really tastes like the green apple yakult drink, except that it is in ice-cream form.

The Hei sesame flavour is fragrant, nutty and subtly sweet. I expected the sesame ice-cream to be more 'rough', but it was surprisingly smooth. One of the better sesame ice-creams I have tried.

$20 for this portion of half braised duck, added tofu and egg. Both skin and meat is tender and really seasoned with the right amount of sauce. Tofu is soft too. Chilli is sour with vinegar. Shiok.

Mouthful and mouthful of savoury maggie noodles, bits of bite size mutton is scattered inside. The chilli sauce over the cucumber on the side matches the noodles nicely. Fried egg simply completes the meal.

With the 2018 World Cup fever going on, there were only a few customers in the shop.

My choice of bread: Italian loaf
Choice of sides/ vegetables: Romaine/ tomato/ cheese/ olives X2
Choice of sauce: Ancho Chipotle

As with my previous visit to this outlet, the sandwich was toasty and this is what I like most about toasties. Very warm to (my) touch; almost a tad too warm to hold with my bare hands. One of the warmest sandwiches I ever had thus far. Warm food is just so comforting and enjoyable. It could be an age thing. 😆

Compared to Subway's sandwiches, I would say subway sandwiches are warmed (10secs), but they are not toasty warm/ hot.
Toasties' bread, like I mentioned in my previous review, has a thin, shiny, crispy skin/ crust that is so satisfying to bite into.

The chipotle sauce was creamy and spicy, and a tad too much.

Still, I love the Chipotle chicken sandwich.

Just to add on, their (skinny) fries are fantastic as well! They are like Long John Silver's fries; so crispy and nicely flavoured. Except that they are skinnier.

No crowd at this outlet. Seats aplenty despite the world cup fever now).

I usually have Subway sandwiches and this is the first time I'm trying Toasties out.

I had the 6-inch smoked chicken and bacon sandwich.
My choice of bread: Italian.
The sides/ veggies I have chosen to go with my sandwich are:
Romaine/ tomatoes/ olives/ cheese/ haystack onion
Choice of sauce:
Creamy pesto (recommended by helpful staff)

Had to wait for a while for order to be prepared. There were only 2 staff. 1 in the kitchen, another at the cashier counter taking our order. Service was good.

Am well pleased with our food served; bread was toasty and had a really nice crisp. The toasted bread had a thin, almost shiny crackly crust that is crispy. Sandwich was absolutely yummy! The standard sauce (not the creamy pesto) that came along with the sandwich was a nice contrast to the meat; slightly tangy.

IMO, Toasties sandwiches are a notch above the subway sandwiches, justifying the slightly higher pricing.
