One of my favourites was their signature "Le Omm", a Matcha soufflé sponge cake layered with Mascarpone cheese spiked with a tinge of rum and Matcha powder. The cheese gave the cake a creamy mouthfeel and slight sweetness to balance out the natural bitterness of the Matcha. It was paired with the Oriental Green tea from @antea.social which complemented the underlying light bitter notes of the cake. It was a match made in heaven 😌

Decided to check it out since I was rather nearby. They only a quite a few pieces on display, while most of them are placed in the kitchen, so do ask the staff for the availability of the flavours.
Glad to have went for this — the pastry is pretty similar to the Chinese sort here; thin, light and flaky while the filling inside is certainly a hit for Orh Nee lovers — silky smooth, earthy yam paste that is suitably sweet with a ginkgo nut included in the middle. Definitely got me loving it from the first bite!
This cake is as light as its colour (for a black sesame item), so go ahead and keep that slice to yourself, no sharing required! The diplomat cream filling is the same black sesame custard used for their sister company Koki Tamagoyaki's puffs, recipe adjusted to thicker consistencies to sandwich between the spongey cake layers. The streusel crumbs are too sugary for my liking, but some people might prefer that since the cake itself isn't too sweet.

What I love about Nesuto is their tea pairing with the desserts! I had the Dong Ding which is a medium roast oolong from Nantou, Taiwan. This compliments the goma cake which is quite singular in taste profile, so you can appreciate the contrast between the mild fruitiness of the tea and the toasty-nutty black sesame.
Came across Dim Sum Haus while scrolling past posts on Instagram and thought it would be worth a try since the dim sum looked pretty good.
No doubt, this was an item that we pretty much love — the buns were crisp and buttery while it's filled with a good amount of molten custard within which eagerly burst out of the bun as one takes a bite. The salted egg custard was a harmonious blend of sweet and savoury — definitely one of the must order items for those who are into ordering salted egg custard buns at dim sum restaurants.
I was introduced by my friend @aikbengchia to "Babas Peranakan" (#02-225), a stall at Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre that specialises in Peranakan "chap chye png". He told me he ate here nearly every day after his friend enlightened him of their existence last August. It's all the proof I needed of how good their food must be. And true enough, I had a most satisfying lunch for a very affordable $6.
As you can tell from my photo, it was a no holds barred event when it came to me ordering. Faced with the numerous mouthwatering dishes, I knew I had to go big or go home.
Everything was tasty but the two standouts in my overloaded plate were the omelette (it was just like how my grandma use to cook hers - with sliced big onions and chilies) and the crispy fried chicken (the use of "kunyit" in the marinade made it very aromatic). They make the latter in small batches and this popular item moves very quickly. So at times, you may need to wait for a couple of minutes while they are being fried.
The curry gravy splashed on my rice was rich and fragrant, so do ask for more of it if you like your carbs to be loaded with "lemak-ness". Don't miss out on their "sambal belachan" either if you can handle spiciness as it seems to pair well with everything else.

Former head chef of Crystal Jade and man behind CJ's wanton mee, Master Tang previously had a stall in Chinatown but is now here in Sixth Avenue! Prices are super affordable - $3.50 Wanton Noodle, $3.50 Wanton Soup, $5 Pork Knuckle Noodle and $6 Beef Tendon Stewed Beef Brisket Noodle, etc. My Wanton Noodle had al-dente springy egg noodles, fresh juicy wantons and not forgetting the CJ lookalike plus tastealike chili. Though I would have liked a more flavorful soup, it was still a satisfying plate of noodles so similar to CJ's! At this price? I'm so coming back!

Served right out of the fryer, these smelt so good that we couldn't resist grabbing them right away though they were burning our fingers. I've not had that many Korean fried chickens to compare, but this was yum yum yum! They were seasoned well, fried to crisp yet still remaining juicy and tender inside. The fried skin was so addictive that my mum kept sneakily grabbing them off pieces in the basket even though she was full. You can also get the half (4 pieces) at $20 or top up $10 for the whole (8 pieces). Other flavors include Sweet & Spicy ($25/$35), Garlic Soy Sauce ($25/$35), Sliced Green Onion with Mustard Sauce ($25/$40).
Just the second day of reopening and the queues at Hambaobao 2.0 are immediately back! Sandwiched between two well toasted fluffy buns are these thick chunks of crackling fatty pork belly topped with slices of crunchy Japanese cucumbers. The sweet tangy Hoi Sin sauce and English mustard helped to bring it all together with the latter giving that nice extra kick. The hand-cut fries are available for top up at $1.50 and although they are not that crispy, were still nice to munch on in between and because what's a burger without fries?!
Although it's still uncertain if the stalls are here to stay permanently, I'm sooooooo happy that Beauty World's food centre is back up and running with most of the original stall holders. Really missed all the hustling and bustling so much!
Chateraise is easily becoming my to go place for affordable sweet treats, especially after a fiery Mala Xiang Guo meal at Ri Ri Hong in Chinatown! I’ve been hooked onto kinako (soybean powder) flavours ever since my trip to Korea, so I was obviously excited to have found this at just $1.50. Hidden under that layer of soybean powder is sweet brown syrup and milky ice cream. It can get a little dry on the top so just make sure you dig your spoonfuls all the way through to get full mouths of that sweet nutty goodness. So worth it for its price!
From Slayer Coffee; the mobile coffee cart run by Campus Superstar alumnus Renfred Ng finally has a brick-and-mortar space located at Havelock II.
Opted for the set where the cake and coffee is bundled at $15 — the cake itself was a whole cake that is definitely bigger than a single slice alone; probably quite suitably sized for a small birthday celebration. It's a New York style Cheesecake that is pretty smooth and rich in flavour; the Matcha-Infusion doesn't overwhelm but adds a hint of roasty and aromatic green tea flavour that lingers at the end of every morsel. The graham cracker at the base gives the cake a different dimension of flavour and texture overall as well.
Walked into Ippudo thinking I was going to have my usual but was completely swayed by the laminated card promoting their seasonal item of "Tom Yum Tonkontsu Ramen".
Verdict: I LOVE IT.
Everything about this works. The soup which the chewy, wavy noodles come in, is incredibly delicious. Think of a thick, aromatic and medium-spicy tomyum rounded off by creaminess from a rich tonkotsu broth instead of the usual coconut milk. Extra fragrance comes from a red shrimp oil and the fresh herbs piled on before serving.
In terms of toppings, there are three garlic prawns (de-shelled save for the head and tail), tomyum flavoured minced pork, half an egg and a pair of the most amazing pickled baby tomatoes.
Can I just say I am so damn happy with this unexpected find today?! 😄 If you wanna try it, do make sure to head down to Ippudo before 30th June 2017.
