Can’t believe I’ve never set foot in this old skool kool cafe despite how my house is within walking distance?! And I have admittedly been missing out! Unlike other indie cafes that are usually found clustered in a cramped fashion, Wheeler’s Yard occupies an entire warehouse’s worth of space and is - simply put - unbelievably cavernous. Decked out in bicycles (yep, think whole bicycles hanging from walls, standing on tables) and biking related gear, the whole grungy aesthetic exudes chill vibes that one naturally settles into, creating the perfect spot for a laidback brunch.
We got ourselves the Pork Katsu Toast and a quintessential brunch item, Eggs Benedict!! As always, hallelujah to the existence of #burpplebeyond with which we got da 1-for-1!!!😚 The former is a unique take on traditional toast; more of an open sandwich, the fluffy white bread base surprisingly managed to hold its own beneath two cripsy patties of pork that were breaded with panko and drizzled generously with tonkatsu sauce...and then topped with a runny egg & bonito flakes. Each bite was so so umami!!!😍 and if it ain’t enough, you can mop up the extra tonkatsu sauce that the servers have kindly spread along the plate!!!
The eggs benny was nothing to shout about, but I did like how the hollandaise was unusually lemony and citrusy. But definitely, get the tonkatsu toast if you’re here!!

If you were here yesterday and witnessed a lady crying out in anguish upon accidentally letting a fry slip off the pile and onto the floor...that was me.😭 Apart from how they shovel the fries into gargantuan mountains, I love how each and every fry is coated with their seasoning - some noticeably more than others, but none are left untouched!! Taste-wise, it’s like having sour cream & onion Pringles but on proper hot chips and wayyyy more umami than what you’d ever expect. I did feel extraordinarily bloated the next day from all the salt and MSG but we all deserve a junky treat once in a while amirite?!😂
Spent all week anticipating a hearty ramen brunch here (especially after hearing that the chef came from Buta God at Ramen champion)...but this bowl didn’t quite meet our expectations. I’m generally impartial when it comes to the different varieties of ramen noodles, yet I’m sorry to say I didn’t enjoy the the curly yellow noodles served here; floury, dense and with an egg-y undertone, the only thought in my mind was “BRUH THIS IS MEE KIA!!!” Ofc I didn’t say that to the cute Japanese waiter. Broth was pretty creamy and thick for a miso-based one (which I appreciated since I’m a tonkotsu kinda gurl) but wayyyyy too oily and salty. While both of these aspects can be justified by the fact that it’s prepared “Hokkaido-style”, such a heavy bowl just can’t cut it for me. The saving grace: their ajitama. Perfectly marinated and with a sticky molten core, it was the one thing I savored throughout the entire meal. Maybe their tempura don would fare better - family behind mine ordered the ginormous unagi bowl and were going nomnomnom non-stop!!😋
Simple. Classy. Elegant. Words that describe this place if you’re able to ignore the adjacent escalator, carrying a never-ending stream of people who can’t help but eyeball what you’re eating😂 Thanks to #burpplebeyond , we capitalized on the 1 for 1 and got both the croissant and waffle sets, along with a GIANT scoop of ✨pistachio, ✨rum & raisin and ✨hazelnut chocolate. The pistachio is a classic must-have which I am NUTS about; infused with a rich roasted flavor and...did I mentioned nutty?? In terms of both taste and fillings🤤 Waffle - though small - was crisp on the outside and soft within, complete with the faintest aroma of buttermilk. 🥐
The croissant base is a welcome deviation from the norm - served warm, the buttery flakes soaked up every bit of gelato and complemented the sweetness of both flavors (rum & raisin and chocolate hazelnut) perfectly😍 ‘Twas a truly decadent post-lunch dessert, so glad I could savor both of these for the price of one!!! If you’re a broke university student like me...well it’s time to get burpplin’!!!😂
I have no words to describe this trippy and insanely psychedelic cabaret club...but hey, it’s not all about the gram here; the food served is surprisingly decent. Though the popcorn shrimps were pretty meh and err a little burnt, let’s take a moment to appreciate the thought that went into the rainbow dip - instead of just coloured mayo/chili/ketchup, they have flavors like wasabi mayo(green) and sour cream and onion(blue) which I truly enjoyed and stuffed my face with!!! Even the chili-tomato(red) had an underlying hint of smokey BBQ sauce! Okay that’s all, I was just really SHOCKED that the food was actually edible
Finally giving the real deal (I.e.: NOT in instant noodle form) a taste and there’s no going back!!! Gone are the days of ordering boxes of these babies on airfrov - even if you’ve mastered the art of instant ramen, nothing can compare to the authentic experience of slurping up the piping hot bowl that is set before you with the constant shouts of “IRASSHAIMASE” in the background😂
You can customize nearly the entire bowl here, varying factors like richness of broth, spice level, amount of garlic & cha shu, etc. We went with all the recommended servings and had no regrets!!! Tonkotsu broth was absolutely rich and creamy, fully encapsulating the essence of pork bone and yet still managing not to overwhelm the senses. This fullness is paired perfectly with their thin variety al dente noodles that are surprisingly firm; even the finely sliced cha shu hides a surprise with its fatty, melty texture - immediately apparent upon being popped in one’s mouth! Though the egg could’ve been better marinated, I’d say this bowl far exceeds expectations...and I came expecting A LOT!! P.S.: this place uses the vending machine system so pls don’t be a dumbfounded tourist (like me) and hold up the entire queue!!!😋
A mixture of Chinese and Japanese cuisine, these paos are Setagaya’s very own creation!! On this tiny plate, pillowy lotus leaf buns struggle to contain lettuce leaves and an abundance of sweet & spicy sesame sauce that literally drenches a never-before-seen thick cut of chashu (think slightly thicker than 2 of my sausage fingers). And the cha shu...I don’t think I’ve ever had something quite like this in Singapore. Each slice comprises alternating layers of tender lean meat and melt-in-your-mouth fat, forming an overall juicy slab that is further torched to perfection; this heavy, smoky char is EXACTLY what I desire at 2am after a whole day of flying!!! 🤤
[HOSTED] There’s no stopping at one - legend has it that a petite young girl once downed 20 bowls of these noodles...yes, it’s just THAT good!!! Even at $1, you can mix and match to your heart’s desire; for the soup base, choose either their Thick Thai Herb (incredibly creamy and silken, almost like a tonkotsu broth) or their Tom Yam (which packs a spicy kick) and pair it with a variety of meats like pork slices, beef balls, chicken slices, etc.!!

As part of their anniversary promo, their ✨Crispy Pork Belly is also a major steal at $6.80!! 3 generous layers of 🐷, complete with airy and crackly skin. Seafood lovers will enjoy the ✨Crispy Soft Shell Crab w/ Cheese Web - we were lucky to get a lightly battered crab that was PACKED with roe!! Add on nacho cheese and you get the ultimate junky treat that will please all ages. But the ultimate highlight for me was their ✨Pork Skewers - generously glazed and oh-so juicy, each stick carries an authentic flavor that is true to its origin as a local delight from the streets!!😍
✨
Do pop by and give their Thai cuisine a try when you’re in the area! Though small, they don’t compromise on quality - owner Dexter (@leiseng ) personally nabbed the chef from Thailand😂 So rejoice knowing you can get authentic Thai food at wallet-friendly prices!😋 .

Not to be philosophical, but this blatantly simple and undressed burger speaks volumes about the way of life in Hong Kong. Basically a few lettuce leaves, tomatoes, pickles -with ranch hurriedly drizzled over the whole pile - topped with a cutlet of pork and then slapped down with a heavily buttered burger bun. This is as close to the original experience as it gets! Tastewise, we found the pork chop a little too tough and dry, so the abundant ranch dressing did well to moisten it. Protip: deconstruct the burger prior to consumption or risk having ranch spurt all over your clothes!!!
Let us just pause for a second to admire that decadent black sheen coating each wing 😍 This isnt your run-of-the-milk braised chicken wings; the soy sauce is rich, heavy and absolutely intoxicating with its full-bodied flavor which slowly permeates through your mouth. Rest assured, the sauce does well in achieving a balanced taste and is definitely not as “jelak” as it looks! Considering how you’d never find this elsewhere, I strongly recommend getting this!
