Honeydew you know how I can mango my way out of this? Last week, I met somebody who went on an all juice detox diet. I don't know how she survived a week without any solid food. So naturally, I went ahead to find out what the dill was about. Then I tried replacing my meals with one of these cold pressed juices, but canned the diet after 2 hours cause I couldn't concentrate. Freshly harvested, steamed and eaten on its own without any seasoning. Gooseneck barnacles, or percebes to the Spanish, (or Din Toes as our group referred to them) have a similar in texture to octopus or the neck of the soft-shell clam. It tastes like sweet juicy crab to me, like scallops to others. as our neighbours in the malay archipelago would say. I've been meaning to try this tiny Indonesian food place for the longest time after spying it from the daily tram ride home. Finally gave it a go and my palette thank me for the spicy assault. Here is a picture perfect Nasi Padang - a scrumptious platter of rice with Ayam Penyet, Rendang Padang, beef goreng, sayor lodeh, Sambal Telor and something beefy which I couldn't identify but quaffed it down in a matter of seconds. Funny thing I noticed is that the "Hungry Ghost Festival" here isn't as big of a deal compared to Singapore where the whole island literally goes up in flame and musical performances on this day to honour the wandering spirits. A living, breathing, fiery and tangy bowl of Assam Laksa in the flesh right here in Hong Kong... And in my neighbourhood no less. I'm beyond stoke to find this here, eventhough if its taste isn't as "powerful" as I would love it to be. It needed to be more fishy, was missing the unique flavours of bunga kantan (ginger flower) and had shredded cucumber replaced by chopped lettuce (why?). Honestly, it's not a half bad attempt by a local chef. And it was nothing this true blue Malaysian couldn't fix with a generous helping of thick hae ko (shrimp paste), chili padi and some lime juice. Order was restored momentarily before the waitress announced that they may discontinue this dish come September if demand doesn't pick up by then. Apparently it's not winning over the locals.
