Hokkien Mee Large ($8) Housed in the same coffee shop as Ponggol Nasi Lemak, Yi Ji Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee serves a dryer than usual version of our comforting dish. Using a mix of thin beehoon and thick yellow noodles, we felt that this dish offered a nicer contrast in textures compared to hokkien Mee served with thick beehoon. The dish was well-flavored and one could taste the rich seafood umami flavors when slurping the the delightful noodles. For this $8 portion, about 4 or 5 prawns were given. There were also chewy mock abalone pieces that went surprisingly well with the noodles. What spice lovers would really appreciate is the spice level of the chili given at the side. With “super spicy” written on the banner of this stall, one could be certain to satisfy their desire for the mouth numbing sensation that comes alongside their bright red chili sauce. Do check it out if you’re at the coffee shop! It’s certainly an above average plate of hokkien Mee that is sure to leave your tummy (and soul) satisfied.

So I decided to venture on my own and sacrificing my dinner to hunt down the better food places. • Turned into this place after dropping a sweet & cheerful air stewardess. Decided to try this roast meat joint and to my surprise the sio bak's fats melted in my mouth while the skin was crunchy. Roasted duck was good too but char siew was a little too hard. Whole Spring Chicken Set Whole Spring Chicken Set ($10.80) My one greatest weakness is for friend chicken, whether it is fried chicken skin, friend chicken wings or fried whole spring chicken! It is really good value to get a whole spring chicken deep fried till golden brown served with 2 sides of your choice at such an economical price. This @chargrillbar.sg is a chain at some Kim San Leng coffeeshops so it won't be difficult to patronize them! The spring chicken smelt great when it arrived. The skin was nicely seasoned and crunchy. The breast meat was as usual a little drier but overall, this chicken was fried so well that some parts of the bone just felt like the batter crumbs! It is therapeutic to be slowly devouring the entire fried bird😋!

Homemade Goh Heong Roll (L)(RM 15) A delicious five-spice roll with crispy skin that has a powdery texture. The stuffing inside is meaty and packed with flavour.

Fu Rong Egg (S)(RM 12) Your standard omelette, a bit on the greasy side, but with a slight crispiness.

Ching Long Choy (M)(RM 16) A refreshing and crunchy stir-fry of green vegetables, garlic, and beansprouts. Simple and tastisfying.

Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak Found another favourite breakfast spot among the locals, near to custom building with a few minutes drive away. Alang Tunggal Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng Berempah is famous for what their signage already indicated. Was surprised to see the place full house even on weekday morning time. I guess everyone is grabbing their breakfast before work. Love their crunchy fried chicken with fragrant nasi lemak, especially the chilli sauce.

Dim Sum Looking for somewhere to grab your breakfast at JB? Hock Chiang Hin Dim Sum shop is only a short walk away from the custom building. Open early morning and you already find many regulars would come here to get their dim sum breakfast in this old school shop. They actually opened since 1940s, and still going strong with their dim sum offerings.

Lychee Osmanthus Found another gelato shop at this busy JB city centre called the Sibling’s Gelato. The location can consider away from the heart of tourist streets, further down along the street of Jalan Ibrahim. This gelato shop has some cosy seating area, serving gelato, waffle and drinks. Went for the refreshing lychee osmanthus flavour that comes with a pieces of lychee.

The Dry Version Rocks! It doesn’t get more old-school than this. Cooked with great care by an old man who looks to be in a perpetually bent position (he stops once in a while as though to ease some discomfort), and assisted by his elderly wife who takes orders, handles the payments and does all the slicing of ingredients for the topping, this is a hawker dish you will need to be patient for. Just like everyone else in the queue for “Covent Garden Prawn Noodles” (stall 01-25 at Havelock Road Cooked Food Centre). Unless you like your soup light and delicate in terms of prawn flavour, I would recommend choosing the dry version here because the noodles are tossed in a very tasty combination of savoury chilli sambal and pork lard oil (complete with a few heavenly pieces of crunchy fried lard). My $5 bowl had such a generous amount of mee and beehoon that I had a hard time finishing all of it. So for those with a small appetite, the $4 serving should suffice.

Prawn Noodles-$4 One of the perks in staying in a mature estate in Singapore is that there are many heritage hawker legends. Covent Garden Prawn Mee is one of them. Originally located at the Covent Garden Food Center, they moved over to Havelock food Center after the Covent Garden area was marked for redevelopment. There is perpetually a Long queue every time I visit. I tried the dry version this time. It's not too bad, the Chilli and noodles were good. The soup wasn't bad, it was slightly watered down but there was depth in the flavour. Overall, a decent bowl of prawn mee. There's definitely a taste of nostalgia eating here.

Prawns Only Mee With Added Pig's Tail Definitely a heritage food stall the old couple dish up a great hae mee meal. You can choose from normal prawn mee with slices of prawn, pork and fish cake or ask for just prawns (higher price = medium sized prawns), pig tail, small intestines or pig skin. Be prepared to queue on weekends for up to 30 minutes as they really take their time to serve up a great dish. They're closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Yummy yummy yum yum yum!
