If you're in the CBD area (or don't mind the trip there from wherever you may be) you have to try the AhLiang Ipoh Hor Fun at the Amoy - stall 02-122.

Shredded chicken and smooth rice noodles go really well together in the rich herbal zhup that will leave you with the best aftertaste in the world. This is a meal you definitely won't want to brush your teeth after. Oh, and if you want the perfect trifecta, add on the deep fried fish dumplings. They're always so good fried to golden perfection, crunchy on the outside and bursting with flavours inside. Once the zhup gets in the mix, you'll definitely have something to write home about.

Oh, and if you're properly kiasu, you'll know to wait patiently for the uncle to pull out a freshly fried batch of dumplings. The tastiest 3rd degree mouth burns ever.

Located at level 2, #02-117. Gotten the Large set at $4. Chilli was good but the pig intestines does have a slightly stronger taste.

Not your ordinary wanton noodles. Wantons stuffed with a whole prawn each, tender braised cha-shu, runny ramen-egg and an addictive potato prawn. $5.50, for a quality cross between ramen ingredients and wanton noodles. 😄 not forgetting the flavourful braised-with-pork soup

Even though there was a queue at 1:00pm, I didn’t have to wait long as bowls of ban mien was served to diners at a fast rate. Naturally, I went for their signature, the Dry Chilli Ban Mee ($5), and I was clearly satisfied at the end of it. The dry chili mixture brought a slight spicy kick and after mixing it together with the poached egg, black fungus, fried shallots, minced meat and anchovies, you are in for a comforting lunch. The choice of these simple ingredients complimented with each other, and in the process, able to make the entire bowl shine brightly in the spotlight.

Desserts after dinner at Chinatown Food Complex which is just a street away. One street down and you'll reach Chinatown MRT Station.

FOOD: There're shaved icings, a good variety of hot desserts, and (uniquely) some dim sum like lormaigai. As compared to the usual dessert shops that I frequent, have to admit that their paste is smoother!

PRICE: Generally the same as other dessert shops which you find in malls. Prices are inclusive of GST :)

AMBIENCE: It may look small from the outside but it's actually the size of three shops. Therefore, you don't really need to worry about not getting a seat here. Environment is clean.

SERVICE: With menus provided, order on your own at the cashier counter with your table number. Nothing exceptional.

CONCLUSION: Should really try their pastes. As many of the dessert stalls at Chinatown Food Complex close early, this would be a good alternative.

Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle (it's a mouthful even in mandarin which the signboard is written in) is right next to Fatty Ox Hong Kong Kitchen. However, to distinguish itself from its competitor next door, they offer up beef brisket noodles.

This plate of beef brisket noodle is done in Cantonese style, which means that instead of the thick sauce of the Hainanese style noodles, it's done much like dry wanton noodles instead. The noodles were sufficiently QQ, but there was no doubt that the beef brisket was the real attraction.

The thick, tremendously tender chunks of bovine brisket were unbelievably umami and stunningly savory, sending me on a trip to Flavortown with every bite. When paired up with the feisty and sufficiently zingy chili sauce on the side, it attained beefy divinity.

However, the only letdown was the slices of shabu-shabu beef that accompanied the brisket. They had way too much sodium bicarbonate loaded into them during marination, and as a result they were ludicrously puffed up due to them absorbing way too much water, an unfortunate side effect of having too much sodium bicarbonate in it.

Ordering just the brisket alone without the undesirable slices of beef would probably be the best way to go.

😁 come support . Double boil goodness ! Abalone , chicken, sea cucumber, fish maw, dried scallop, mushroom & Gingseng. 🐻 super ❤️ this

A different kind of egg benedict found here. Two perfectly poached egg atop crispy crab cake, drenched in hollandaise sauce made of coconut curry! Love the crab cakes as each bite you'll taste the fresh crustacean meat. But the sauce requires an acquired taste.

FOOD: Astons provides really cheap meals! It started out as a western stall in normal coffee shops and slowly expanded to individual restaurant. There are quite a number of outlets around Singapore. My friend and I visited the Changi Airport Terminal 1 outlet (Just opened on 15 June 2015). There are three main types of restaurants - Specialties, Express and Steak & Salad.

PRICE: The prices on their menus are NETT. Yes, there's no need to worry about the 17%. Check out the food prices on the online menus: http://www.astons.com.sg/menu_delight.htm

Their main dishes come with 2 side dishes which you can choose at your delight from the given choices. My friends have placed Mac & Cheese at their top chart. Water is FOC.

AMBIENCE: (Depends on which outlet you're going) Changi's outlet was lit up with warm spotlights which gives a pretty romantic ambience. There are quite a number of seats but do expect long queues during meal time. Enjoy your meal with classical music.

SERVICE: After knowing your table number, you'll have to order your food at the counter on your own. Next, you'll be directed to your table. Food will be served shortly like approximately 10 minutes. There are quite a number of waiters/waitresses on the ground which you can approach for help if you need any.

CONCLUSION: As a west-sider who seldom take an hour trip to the East for food only, I'd try out their other outlets! If I'm going Changi Airport again to send others off or to be sent off by others, I'd definitely come back to T1 ASTONS:)

FOOD: You may have eaten various fishball noodles, mee pok and mee gia dry before but this is really worth trying. You will remember the taste (especially that of the soup!) and come back for more.

PRICE: $2.50 (Small), $3 (Medium; if you don't specify, you'll get this size), $3.50 (Large)

AMBIENCE: Typical market food place. Don't expect it to be spick and span. Expect a row of basins with soap (almost all the time) to wash your hands. (:

SERVICE: It's fast. Due to the variety of food choices they provide, think before you order especially for the picky ones.
1. Type of noodle
2. With or without chili
3. With or without pork lard
4. With or without tow gay etc

CONCLUSION: It opens till really late at night, beyond 12am. Really good supper choice!

Friends gathering at 49 Seats (There're really 49 seats in the restaurant). RESERVE early, at least one day earlier, to feel the vintage decorations on the inside of the restaurant, or enjoy the sheltered outdoor area.

FOOD: I've ordered Chicken Chop (Black Pepper Sauce) which was tender and juicy. It came with fries and salad. Tom Yam Chicken Cutlet which was greatly recommended by one of our friends was good. Pastas' portion was satisfying as can be seen from the photo but I guess ceramic plate instead of steel plate would add points to the appearance.

PRICE: No service charge; no GST. Generally dishes are below $15. Drinks priced at about $3.

AMBIENCE: Reserved too late, had to sit outside. Not too bad, we could laugh out loud.

SERVICE: Cash register ran out of coins and I was given a discount of 90cents as they did not want to keep me waiting. Right after the above we-fie was taken, the waiter volunteered to help us take group photos and also joked around with us. Really wanted to stay around longer but it seemed that the number of customers is always greater than 49 seats.

CONCLUSION: Affordable and delicious. Search for '49 Seats' on Facebook for reservation contact number and directions to the restaurant. There is another outlet at Orchard. Though the restaurant is not yet certified halal, it claims that no pork/lark is being used in the process of cooking (Information retrieved from 49 Seats Instagram).

Being the first time experience, there is no comparison which I can make. FOOD: My friend and I did not opt for the 2-people set. We browsed the ala carte and chose about 10 dishes (without rice/noodle). Some of the dishes have generous portion, some. After all, our stomachs were much satisfied. PRICE: We spent $22 for the meal, which I think is pretty reasonable for 2 pax. AMBIENCE: Great ambience. There's some music being played, sometimes Chinese songs sometimes English songs. Nice place to catch up with friends, talk at whatever volume you want, remove your slippers and sit like a Buddha. It's a typical kopitiam. Perhaps there's enough smoke from the stove, no one in the vicinity was smoking. SERVICE: Everything was easy and smooth from sitting down to ordering, out of gas to paying. The shop owners/waiters/waitresses were so friendly. CONCLUSION: I'm going back again for supper.
