The Better Scoop is one of those ice-cream parlours that we find it particularly difficult to not drop by if we are passing by an outlet of theirs — these folks had grown quite a fair bit since their beginnings as Just Because Creamery especially considering how they now operate several locations islandwide. This is also not forgetting the Ri Ri Cha 日日茶 concept that is prominently located along Sago Street near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Chinatown Complex Food Centre.

Whilst we usually find it hard to resist going for their Nian Gao Waffles (they are one of the first, if not the first to offer such style of Waffles) whenever we are with other folks, we were passing by their Serangoon outlet by ourselves and we just couldn’t find ourselves skipping in an opportunity to grab at least a scoop of ice-cream here. Skimming through the selection of flavours that they have to offer for the day that are stocked in their display fridge, we eventually found ourselves going for the Pi Pa Gao (Loquat) Mint. This flavour does have a bit of significance on their money; whilst the entire trend of Pi Pa Gao (Loquat) being added into various forms of food as “dark cuisine” is popularised by an influencer not too far back, it is well noted that The Better Scoop had been serving up a Pi Pa Gao Latte for quite a while (not that they were the first to come up with the idea of incorporating Pi Pa Gao (Loquat) into a beverage though; we know of Woobbee doing so for a long time). Despite its rather milk-based appearance, the flavours of Pi Pa Gao (Loquat) hits hard — the deep earthy sweetness with a herbal note is quick to soothe the throat, all that with the slight menthol finish that makes things absolutely refreshing at the same time. The smart incorporation of mint here extends those refreshing, cooling notes further — absolutely the flavour to go for after a heaty meal; who knows if this is the ice-cream that one could help out an irritation in the throat while at it?

2 Scoops ($8.50) Pipagao and Acai Banana I decided to get flavour that I didn't tried before. Pipagao got strong milky and creamy texture as I felt that it's not that strong taste tbh. Acai Banana got sweet taste but not that milky and creamy texture.

Their nian gao was really nice. When u cut, u can see the nian gao pull. The waffle was crispy too. We ordered double scoop - black soymilk and chrysanthemum with goji berries. The black soymilk tasted like black sesame paste. The chrysanthemum was really strong but no hint of goji berry. I like that the ice cream didn melt immediately. I would come back for the waffle again.

Double scoop @ $8
Black sesame with soy milk
Pipagao (premium + $0.50)

Always love the flavours of ice cream here. So adventurous yet so delicious. Too full today to have the niangao waffle but missing it and hopefully will be back soon.

Who would have thought that Nian Gao in Crispy hot Waffle will be so darn good. This is truly unique.

Sometimes u wonder how they come up with such ideas.

Also unique are their flavours of gelato. Got so many unique flavours, couldn't decide, so took 3 flavours.

We had:
1) Pei Pa Koa
2) Tie Guan Yin
3) Osmanthus Oolong

3 of the flavours that u won't get to see anywhere else. All were rather good, our favourite definitely was the Pei Pa Koa.

It’s a combination of lunar new year flavours, nan gao waffle with 2 scoops of local Chinese flavour ice cream, Pei Pa Koe (Loquat) Mint & Chrysanthemum Goji Berries. One for the minty chill, another for the earthy flavour to balance out the sweetness. Added Yuzu Fizz ($5) for a shiok ending
