Established since 1861, Matsuba is not to be missed if you are into good soba.
This bowl of hot soba in clear broth was so simple but surprisingly flavourful. The star of the dish was that big piece of Herring fish on top, amazingly marinated in dark sauce throughout. It went so well with the light soba it didn’t need anything else to complete the meal.
Their main outlet in Kyoto is located near the river junction leading towards Gion. If you are travelling in JR at Kyoto Station, there’s also an outlet in the transit area. Or if you hold a JR Pass, you can just walk in for a good meal and walk out without the crowd!
